8.10 Beijing F1 1K MSE Pass
GG,huhu
sa: louisa
sa: Good afternoon, sir. Here is my card.
Vo: What's your purpose for the visa application?
sa: I need the visa to come to MIT to study for my Ph.D. degree.
Vo: What's your major?
sa: My major is Materials Science and Engineering. And I will focus on modeling and simulation of amorphous materials.
Vo: What is amorphous materials? Uh, amorphous means having no shape!
sa: Amorphous materials is......
Vo: What will you do after you get the Ph.D. degree in MIT?
我觉得总算问到关键问题了,blabla说了老半天, 好象把其它几个重点问题,比如three reasons to come back to China等等,准备的 答案都一起说完了,haha。
Vo: Have a good time in your future study.
sa: Heihei.
Difficulty is always there, and friends are always there, too.
Encouragement and advice always accompany me along the whole journey.

Good afternoon, sir/madam! Nice to meet you. Here's my card.
Vo: What is your purpose for the visa?
M: I need a F-1 visa in order to come to MIT to study for my Ph.D degree.
Vo: But according to I-20, you will pursue a Master's degree?
M: Actually what I will pursue is Ph.D. My department rules that all new graduate students must be admitted as Master's. But there is no need for me to complete the master's degree because I have found my Ph.D. supervisor. I can directly shift into the Ph.D. program after the Qualifying Exam.
Vo: What will you study in the United States? / What is your major? In what aspect of your major will you study?
M: I will study in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. I will focus on modeling and simulation of amorphous materials. I will use my knowledge to ******. May I explain more about my research?
Vo: Yeah, please.
M: ******
Vo: When/where did you get your BS? / What is your academic background?
M: I got my Bechalor's degree in MSE from Tsinghua University last month......
VO: How long will you stay in USA?
M: I will study at MIT for about 5 years. But if I work hard enough, I might be able to get my Ph.D within a shorter time.
Vo: Have you any scholarship?
M: Yes, I was offered a Research Assistantship. The full financial support includes a tuition waiver, health insurance and a yearly stipend of $21720.
Vo: What will you do if you do not have financial award for the second year?
M: MIT always offers financial aids annually, and all previous Tsinghua students got aid for the second year. I am confident that my previous academic performance and research will help me to get the aid for the second year. (In any event, if I can come to MIT, many more possibilities may open up for future funding.)
Vo: What do you do with your work for PhD? / What is your plan? / What will you do after graduation?
M:
1) I am going to develop the energy-saving amorphous transformers in China. These amorphous transformers can reduce current energy-transforming losses by 60 to 70%, and have been identified as a primary solution to the problem of electrical energy shortage in China.
2) My research can find the optimum material structure and processing technique to achieve the best performance of amorphous transformers.
3) This technique is in great demand in China both now and in years to come, and many transformer companies are seeking qualified scientists in this area. For example, ****** Corporation, the biggest company in China that specializes in manufacturing amorphous transformers. I think that will be a good choice for me to fullfil my career goal.
Vo: Please give me three reasons that you will come back to China?
Me:
1) China is in severe shortage of electrical power now, and much electricity has been lost when passing through transformations. The ultra-low-loss amorphous transformer could be a good choice to save energy.
2) But the domestic fabrication cost is very high, and China could not afford very expensive imported amorphous transformers in great numbers. I want to use my knowledge to help improve the efficiency and lower the price of energy-saving amorphous transformers in China. I believe my future in China is very bright.
3) Amorphous transformers will benefit the environment, by reducing the consumption of substantial fossil fuel necessary to accommodate excessive transforming losses.
Vo: What about your salary then?
Me: Well, at first it may be about 400K RMB per year. But what I want is not merely a decently paid job, but the sense of achievement and social status. I think I can easily get a satisfying position in China with the Ph.D. degree from MIT
Vo: Can you explain why 90% Chinese students didn't come back?
Me: I have my own choice. (I don't know why they did not come back. Maybe it's relevant with the major.) I hope to help solve the problem of power shortage in China through my future research on amorphous transformers.
Vo: Why do you want to study in USA? / Why do you choose this Univ.?
Me:
USA-1) In the field of my specialty---****** US has the most leading and systematic research, while the research is only in its infancy in China.
Univ.-1) My future supervisor at **Univ. is pioneering in the research of ** in the world. I believe my study there will surely benefit my future research on amorphous transformers in China.
2) MIT is a great university. It has been my dream for a long time.
Vo: Why do you like your major?
M: Well,
1) Curiosity about the unknown and happiness in solving problems. My previous and future research, *** will help answer some of the fundamental problems in materials science.
2) Amorphous materials have many distinct and useful properties.
3) China is in great need of amorphous transformers to save energy.
Vo: Why do you want to pursue a doctor's degree?
M:
1) In order to benefit my future research on energy-saving amorphous transformers in China, it is essential to have a thorough and comprehensive understanding of amorphous materials. Materials science is a very broad subject and many fields are interconnected, so a two-year's Master degree is just too short to accomplish this.
2) You know degree is highly emphasized in China. I think I can easily get a satisfying position in China with the Ph.D. degree from MIT
V0: Why do you receive financial aid from this Univ.?
M: I applied for the financial aid and my future advisor gave me the offer. I personally think the grant of financial aid is primarily based on undergraduate academic performance. My previous research experience also plays a role, because it has much relevance with Prof.***'s potential projects.
Vo: What will you do, if what you study in US is no loner in hot demand in China five years later?
M: It has taken US 15 years to put about 1 million amorphous transformers into use. China is presently at the threshold of this work. Experts estimate that China may have to spend 20 years to reach the level. But our goal is also to replace 10% of the current transformers. I think it should take several decades to realize this ultimate goal. So I am confident that what I have learned in the US will play an important role when I come back.
Vo: Will you stay in US if your advisor offers a post-doc position?
M: Well, of course not. I will come back to China immediately after I get my Ph.D. degree. For most people, the post-doctor period aims at the development of skills for a tenure position. But I have to closely relate my research to applications. I believe that gaining practical experience will be more beneficial than post-doc training.(这个回答全是copy的,呵呵)
Vo: Future position?
M: The employment of amorphous transformers has been proven a very efficient solution to energy shortage in China. I am confident that in China there will be many opportunities for me to apply what I have learned in US to practice.
1) Transformer industry: e.g.***, a rapidly growing company in Chinese transformer industry. / ***, the largest manufacturer of amorphous transformers in China
2) Materials industry: e.g. ***
Vo: What will you do if I don't issue you the visa?
M: If so, it is a great pity, because I will have to give up the valuable opportunity to come to MIT and study amorphous materials. But I will try to continue my study and research on amorphous transformers in a domestic research institute, and contribute to the large scale application of this energy-saving amorphous transformer in China.
Vo: Have you applied any European Universtiy?
M: No, I haven't. Because almost all the leading research groups of modeling and simulation of amorphous materials are in the US.
