Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.

When we talk about this topic, we consider two aspect of it. One is the role of the nonmainstream areas; the other is the importance of it. Although I agree the nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a role in nowadays society, I don’t agree the word 'vital' used by the author as a qualification.

The nonmainstream areas now play roles in psychological comforts or fulfillment in human curiosity. When confronted with the things which are not satisfied their wishes by scientific explanations, people seek the nonmainstream areas for alternative explanations. For instance, people believe in the other world in which a person’s spirit lives after he/she die while science tells them that human do not exist after they die. They use these explanations as comforts to their wishes. After all, no one will satisfy that he/she will be the nourishment of the bugs after he/she die. The nonmainstream areas are also used as fulfillment of human curiosity and entertainments. Occultists use occultism to explain the supernatural phenomena. Girls like to foresee their loves by the influence of the stars. Fortune-telling shows attract people to sit in front of the TV. Directors use psychic and paranormal pursuits as factors in their movie. Although the nonmainstream areas do play roles in society, all these roles are not fundamental for human.

Admittedly, in old days, the nonmainstream areas so called nowadays such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits were indeed mainstream areas. People presumed that the stars affected the nature force on the earth. Governors asked astrologer to foresee the climatic disaster in next year. Past Chinese emperors believed that their life was connected with a star called 'Zi Wei' which blessed themselves and their dynasties. When a war began, people asked the fortune-teller to gain oracles from the gods. And ancient Norse thought that it was the Valkyrie who was sent by the Odin to decide which side of the war to win. In some regions of the world, people worshiped the nature force as spirits because the nature force exceeded their comprehension. In those ages, the nowadays nonmainstream areas in faith played vital roles in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by science for the lack of improvement of science.

However, in today’s society, with the great discoveries and improvements in science, people no longer need the nonmainstream areas of inquiry to satisfy their fundamental needs. Meteorology helps people to know the future weather. Astronomy tells people that the stars are like our sun and does not affect anyone's destiny. When a person gets ill, he/she will not ask the help from a shaman but go to hospital for doctors' treat. In the wartime, a general may say:” God Bless my army." But he/she does not really ask the god's help or summon a Valkyrie. The arcane of the nature are now understood by the human in an enormous extent. In this greatly developed scientific age, astrology, fortune-telling, psychic and paranormal pursuits, and anything about mystery fade out from the main places of the society. Science instead of them and meet about all fundamental needs of human.

To sum up, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry do play a role in today’s society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. But the role is inessential. Actually, the nonmainstream areas just take a marginal place in present page of the human history.

首先你的一个切入点很好：过去和现在，以前在科学还不是很发达的情况下，人们的生活中不可避免的出现了nonmainstream areas，也就是他们当时的mainstream as you mentions，这其实就是给定了一个背景，在展开的时候就不会很干。但是，我觉得在正文第三段的论述略显单薄，你论述了随着科技的反展，的确一些非主流的东西没有了，可是在题目中的are not addressed by mainstream science没有体现出来，你觉得呢？
还有一个问题，就是题目所说的也应该归于科学而不是迷信吧。。这道题我把握的不好，总觉得在让步以后的阐述上好像缺点什么，而不是简单的主流取代问题。
