just say: how is going?

In west nations, they prefer to talk some news about weather and foods .....

What a coincidence. I was thinking of this when I came across this note.

To tell you the truth, I always feel embarrassed when I greet with the native residents here in America.

when you meet some stranger and the situation makes it necessary for you to greet each other, they usually would say:
- Hello, how are you? (Weren't we taught that "how are you" is only necessary in formal situation to address familiar people?)

when you greet with friends or more familiar people, usally  you should say:
- How are you doing? or
- How is it going?

The reply usually is:
- I'm doing good/well/great. How about yourself?

The other one answer:
- I'm good too.

above is the basic pattern. But it's not always so simple.
for example, people may start a greeting in this way:
- What's up?
- How's everything?
- Good to see you again.
- I hope you are all the best today.

Sometimes I really feel very awkward in greeting. I hope other experienced guys here could give more examples in different situations (in grocery store, in a bank, at school, on the phone, etc.) or share your experience with us. That must be fun!

another commonly used greeting in informal situation: long time no see.
It's said to be originated from Chinese greeting.
