近日我给oberlin admission office的两位曾经在orientation里同桌进餐的associate director发了一封email询问一些关于申请的问题。早就收到了其中一位的回信，但是另外一位家中有事，所以今日才回复。现在我把他们的回复整理后一起发出来，希望能对对oberlin有兴趣的同学有帮助。

Mary Conger:Each year the number of international ED applicants varies.  Last year there were probably about 15 or so international EDs, only two of which we accepted outright (neither of which were from mainland PRC); most others we deferred to the regular applicant pool.  Because our budget for international students is limited, it is rare that we are able to offer many students ED admission since we feel as though it is wiser to view them in the context of the whole applicant pool.  To be honest, I don't recall many ED apps from China last year, if any.  Once I'm back in the office I can look to see for certain, though, if you'd like.

Joshua Levy:There were probably about 20 international students who applied ED last year.  2 were admitted.  The rest were either deferred or denied. Those who we knew were not good candidates were denied admission.  In the rest of the cases, we wanted to see what the rest of the applicants from a particular country were going to look like so we deferred their admission until the spring. But I think since the candidates change every year so the number of ED candidates we admit will also vary every year. I don't know about the numbers for China last year.  There might have been 1 who applied ED.  I do know that neither ED international student that we took was from China. But surely it does not mean we will not admit ED candidates from China this year.

T$ Q% m  ?" }0 aMary Conger:No, we certainly do not have a set number of scholarships that we give to each country each year.  We do try to be equitable and fair in how we distribute our monies across the globe, but there is no reason for students from any country to think that we have a set quota on how much money we give or how many students we take from their region.  It all depends on the total applicant pool.

' a8 I4 R* X/ Q2 o7 D. iJoshua Levy:When we give out financial aid to international students, we like to spread the money around the world to the viable candidates.  We do not say that we only have money for one Chinese student.  If there are 3 excellent candidates, for example, we may provide funding for all of them. The reality of the situation is that we do not have an unlimited pool of money for the international students.  We offer financial aid to the best that we see and hope that they enroll at Oberlin.

Mary Conger:As for what is most important in terms of an applicant's profile, there isn't any ONE thing.  Naturally, we're looking for students who are academically prepared and strong, but we're simultaneously looking for good people who are involved in their communities, intellectually curious, and committed to pursuing a liberal arts education in a place like Oberlin.  Frankly, there is no dearth of qualified college applicants these days and so we're not just looking for someone who can do the work at Oberlin, but for students who really want to be a part of our community.  That said, higher scores are always better than weaker ones and students who write good essays are always more attractive than those who write poor ones, but there really isn't just one or two things that dictate what makes a student attractive to Oberlin.

Joshua Levy:We certainly want to see students will good SAT and TOEFL scores. However, a decision is not based solely on these results.  We look at academic performance in high school, extracurricular activities, and essays (particularly the one about why the student wants to study in the US and at Oberlin).  Everything is taken into consideration when we are attempting to reach a decision on an application.

E0 m; J& r- ]/ |4 `comments:可以看出oberlin比较重视essay，尤其why essay。因为两位admission officer都提到了，oberlin希望录取那些最终会来oberlin的人。Mary Conger甚至更直接的说，“其实我们每年都不缺合格的申请者因此我们事实上不是仅仅在找能够在oberlin学的好学生，而是在找那些真正愿意成为oberlin社区一份子的人。”因此，why essay应该相对更被看重吧。这也许就是为什么去年有实力不错的08没能拿到oberlin的offer的原因吧。也许他是够条件的，但是学校觉得他根本不喜欢oberlin，那干脆把FA留给他们认为会来的人吧。

8 f% [2 k6 R0 Q% K最后附上Mary Conger信中的几句话：I hope that this information is what you were looking for. I understand that it is in some ways unhelpful to a potential applicant trying to discern what exactly it is that they need to get into Oberlin, but it should be seen as a positive rather than a negative that Oberlin does not have arbitrary, set criteria that their applicants must meet.  Personally, I think that this is what allows Oberlin to attract and admit a very diverse student population.
