I basically agree with the speaker's assertion that the way people look, dress and act, reveals their attitudes and interests, and also reflects a society's values and interests. However, some underlying emotions and attitudes can’t be simply observed by their appearances and behaviors.
To begin with, the clothes and decorations can present people's interests and living habits. This notion can be simply supported by the case in most native tribes, which have not been challenged much by modern ideas. In such tribes, the customs and traditions can be easily observed through their distinct and unique clothes. The local residents wear their traditional clothes and decorations, which are representative of their ages, careers, marriages and social classes. And in some certain tribes, whether one has committed crime can be observed by special signs. Through the design, pattern and color on the clothes, we can also know much about their respect and worship from certain things, such as the sun, the sea, fire, and some kind of animals, that means a lot to them. In other words, by observing the distinct traditional clothes and decorations, one can learn much about their interests, customs, values, and even religion.
Even in developed districts, where people usually wear common clothes without obvious identity rather than traditional clothes, the residents' living habits and interests can be presented through details. Since people in the democratic society have the right and freedom to choose their favorite clothes, people can wear their suitable clothes to show their own personality. Even a person who doesn't care about what he wears, we can observe his attitude towards life and interests. For example, a man with untidy but comfortable clothes shows that it is a person who pays less attention to the appearance, but more care about the comfort of living. And also, a teenager with strange clothes and hairstyle indicates that he wants to be fashionable, and different from others. That is to say, the style, color, type, tidiness and other details can tell much about the personality and character.
Not only appearances but also behaviors can show peoples' customs and values. In different districts and countries, the entire population usually has some similar behavior, and the way people walk, talk, communicate with each other is to some extent the same, showing their different living habits and what they pursue in life. For example, Arabs talk in a close distance with each other, while Americans stand comparatively further from the person they talk. The different distance shows their different attitudes towards the relationship between people. That is, Americans values on private space, while Arabs like sharing with others.
Nevertheless, although we can tell much about the values and ideas of an individual or a society, some hidden and interior ideas and living concepts can't be simply observed by appearances and behaviors. Some underlying nature personality can only be presented under special circumstance. For example, the nature such as selfishness, greediness, braveness can be obviously presented in urgent time and when something happens. Moreover, people' traditional concepts and attitudes towards pressing social issues, such as divorce, abortion, youth mother, can’t be simply presented by observation.
Overall, appearances and behaviors can generally tell much about the attitudes and values of an individual and a society. However, the hidden interior ideas and nature can’t be simply observed. |
