One fully funded Ph.D. position is available in the SysteMs & InteLligEnce (SMILE) laboratory directed by Dr. Junfei Xie at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, San Diego State University (https://smile.sdsu.edu/). The successful candidates will join the joint doctoral program of Electrical and Computer Engineering departments at University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU). The joint doctoral student will be supervised by Dr. Xie and co-advised by another faculty at UCSD. The research areas of these positions are generally related to control systems, optimization, distributed computing and machine learning, with applications to unmanned aerial vehicles, air traffic management, and autonomous driving.
Applicants must have received a Bachelor’s degree in science and engineering fields. Candidates with strong theoretical background, rich hands-on experience and/or programming skills are highly considered. Research experience in aforementioned areas is a great plus. Dr. Junfei Xie is currently an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the San Diego State University. She received her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China, in 2012. She received her M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2013 and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from University of North Texas (UNT), Denton, TX, in 2016. Before joining San Diego State University in 2019, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computing Sciences at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC). She has received multiple research grants from the National Science Foundation and TAMUCC. Her current research interests include large-scale dynamic system design and control, managing and mining spatiotemporal data, unmanned aerial systems, distributed computing, airborne computing, complex information system, and air traffic flow management, etc. Her research has led to over 40 publications.
San Diego is the second largest city in California, a top tourist attraction and resort area, and a prominent high-technology, aerospace, and aviation production community. It is also one of the best places to live in the United States. It offers a near-perfect climate all the year round, neither too hot nor too cold. Many tech companies are headquartered or have branch offices at San Diego, such as Qualcomm, Apple, Amazon, Google, etc. It has many Chinese restaurants and is close to Los Angeles.
