issue147 Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.
The speaker alleged that tradition and modernization are compatible, and that one must choose between them. Different people have different favors on different things. For a particular thing, one can choose his or her favorite style, traditional or modern. But that doesn't mean tradition and modernization are incompatible. In my view, tradition and modernization can be compatible, and it is not necessary that one has to choose between them.
First of all, there is no absolute definition between tradition and modernization. What is traditional now might be modern in certain era in the past. This is most obvious in the field of fashion. The clothes in the bottom of your wardrobe, which is outdated and traditional now, must have been fashionable and modern. Or else, you wouldn't have bought them. In this field, what is outdated now is also likely to become modern in the future. All of these are decided by those fashion designers, nobody can predict. In addition, what is traditional in one country can be modern in another country in the same time. For example, Christmas is one of the most traditional days in the West, while in China it is very modern to celebrate it, especially among the young people. You can see Santa Claus in the fashion house, fast food restaurants, nearly everywhere the young people often patronize around the Christmas in China.
Secondly, what is traditional can be expressed in a modern way. Tradition is what is passed down from our forebears such as traditional festivals, classical music. They can be combined well with modern things such as computers and pop music. For example, many people have been used to celebrating Christmas which is traditional in modern ways. Many people send electronic cards instead of the traditional cards made of paper to bless their friends and relatives. And Christmas tree, the most traditional thing on Christmas, is always ornamented by the modern technology such as laser. In addition to traditional festivals, in the field of music, the tradition and modernization also begin to be combined. Some pop music bands begin to play pop music with traditional instruments such as violin. You can say one must choose between tradition and modernization because nobody can play pop music and traditional music at the same time with a violin, but the wonderful performance of Bond, the band composed by four girls, two violins, a cello and a viola, tells you that tradition and modernization can be compatible very well.
In modern society, which is so complex, people have different favors and different needs. They can just choose tradition or modernization. They can also choose both of them at the same time. Traditional buildings are always elegantly designed, while modern buildings are more practical, though not so elegant as the traditional ones. An architect can design a house with outlooks of traditional style and modern layout of the inside rooms to meet the needs of these people who care both the appearance and practicality. You needn't choose one and give up another. You just choose what you like, no matter it is tradition or modernization or the combination of them.
To sum up, there is no absolute definition between tradition and modernization. They are related with each other in many ways, and can change into each other as the change of time and situation. As people have different needs, Tradition and modernization can be compatible in our modern society. So you need not choose one and give up anther, just choose what you like, no matter it is tradition, modernization or the combination of the them.
