Argument60 题库
-----题目------
The following appeared in the health section of Glenntown's local newspaper.
'Several national medical studies suggest that older people who have pets tend to enjoy better health than those who do not have pets: those who have pets have lower rates of high blood pressure and arthritis. It seems clear that having to care for an animal promotes good health for the older person. Therefore, Glenntown should establish a program to give a small pet such as a dog or cat to all of its citizens who are over the age of 65. This will help to insure that our senior citizens enjoy good health and have fewer medical bills.'

Pets for the senior citizens
The author of the editorial recommends that in order to have the senior citizens enjoy good health and run fewer medical bills Glenntown should establish a program to give a small pet such as a dog or cat to all of its citizens who are over the age of 65. To support the argument the author cites several national medical studies showing the older people keeping pets have lower rates of high blood pressure and arthritis. However after close scrutiny to the argument and the line of author’s reasoning I find it is logically flawed in several critical respects.
First of all the author unfairly assumes that the result of nationwide studies certainly applies to Glenntown, but the author supplies no evidence whatsoever to substantiate this assumption. Without any information about the diverse geographic locations it is entirely possible that the studies cited base upon the statistics on average. Perhaps the lower rate of high blood pressure and arthritis only appears in several parts of the country while the rest is the opposite. If so, the author's recommendation would amount to poor advise.
Secondly the information of the very studies is too vague. The author only points out that the rates of high blood pressure and arthritis are lower when the old have a pet. It is entirely possible that besides these two diseases, the owners may run greater risk getting the others kinds of diseases such as some skin diseases caused by close relationship with animals. Moreover the author simply equals the older people in the studies with the people over 65 in Glenntown. Lacking the evidence of the real age of the people surveyed in studies, it is of all likely that the samples in the studies are below 65. If it is the case then the author's recommendation is obviously groundless.
Thirdly the study shows that the old who keep pets have a lower rate of high blood pressure and arthritis. But it does not provide any information about the other group of people who do not keep pets at all. Without any comparison, it is entirely possible that the latter group of people enjoy a healthier life.
Finally even if I have to concede that keeping a pet have something to do with receiving a healthier life. But according to the common sense healthy life results from a lot of factors such as the physical body itself and the psychological condition. Admittedly in these respects each one differentiates from another. Without ruling out other possible reasons for keeping fit, the recommendation is unconvincing at least it cannot ensure that having a pet the old will enjoy healthy lives.
What is more, the author does not take the side effects brought by the pets into consideration. Old people may run greater disk getting other diseases for close relationship with pets. Besides people keep pets according to their favorites, as a result simply giving a cat or dog cannot meets the favorite of each one. Thus if people receive the dog or cat reluctantly, it would be a disaster for both, let alone have positive effects for health.
In sum the argument is unpersuasive as it stands. To strengthen it, the author must provide a strong nexus between keeping pets and the health of the old. In order to better evaluate the argument, I would need more information about the studies such as the number of the old engaging in the study, their health condition before and after keeping pets, and about whether the other diseases they suffer from, if they have any, becomes severe or not. And the author must also provide clear definition of the old in the studies cited as well.
