Issue131  大概算是我最难产的一篇了。对艺术还没有入门，只能从表面分析。而且根本没管otherwise的意思。大家帮我看看吧！Body1 离题好像有点远，本来想改改，想想还是贴上来了。大家批吧！

Art has been an indispensable part of people’s life. We cannot imagine a world without painting, music or literature. As the speaker claims, art is an effective way to reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.  

What is art? Most people mistakenly consider the purposes of the arts as being appreciated by the public. In fact, the essence of art is to reveal the feelings and ideas of the producers. Art is just like a mirror, reflecting the inner world of the artists. For example, van Gogh, one of the most famous artists in the world, had not gained what he deserved during his life. Nevertheless, from the particular style of their paintings, such as Starring Night and Sun flowers, we could access to the inner world of the genius, who suffered from depression and loneliness all his later life.

Somebody might doubt whether individual feelings and attitudes expressed in the arts could reflect the ideas and impulse of the society. The nature of human tells us that the doubt is groundless. As social animals, no one could be independent of the influence from the surrounding and the society. Renaissance in 15 and 16th century is a good example. The prosperity of the diversity of ideas in the society cultivated the success of many excellent artists. “David”, one of Michelangelo’s most famous sculptures, broke through the restriction of the traditional styles, portraying “David” partly as an ideal man, an adolescent youth. Michelangelo’s innovation mainly came from the influence of the humanism, which spread the whole Europe and gave birth to the science and democracy in modern society.

Meanwhile, artists are usually the persons who are most sensitive to the impulses in a society. They are more capable in observing and understanding subtle changes in social ideas. Many great works in literature predict or accelerate some significant social revolutions in the history. For instance, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s labeled fiction, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, described the miserable life of the black slaves and revealed people’s desire to abolish slavery in American. The book had tremendous influence upon American society, and finally resulted in the Civil War. Thus, the arts can be compared to the indicator of a society.

Furthermore, some ideas or impulses, which are difficult to be expressed through other ways openly, can be revealed by the arts indirectly. In some autarchic countries where people cannot express their thoughts and feelings freely, the arts could be an effective alteration of communication. For instance, in 1930’s fascist Spain, Picasso expressed his abhorrent feeling against fascism through his paintings. Another example is homosexual movies, which have gradually been accepted by the public. The movies, as well as other literatures related, play an active role in revealing the feelings of homosexuals, who are still denied by the mainstream culture.

To sum up, arts are the reflection of the thought and feelings of the artists, as well as the ideas and impulses of a society. To evaluate the trend of a society, we might look no further than to appreciate the arts in the society.

首先，感觉你开头的阐述好象不太够。
再就是象前者批的那样，例子好象只是摆上，对论点的支持作用没有表现出来，其是我也有同样的问题，只是看别人的文章才会发现。

感觉内在的主线你没有把握好吧。从题目出发分析，我觉得抓住下面这个主线，可能会很好：

1  艺术是人（艺术家）创造的
2  好好花心思考虑一下个人（艺术家）和这个社会的关系

艺术家总是生活在某个特定的时代和社会。人说艺术是源于生活而高于生活。艺术总是不免某种程度地反映艺术家的生活，或者他的作品的素材总是来源于现实生活，而由于艺术家和其所处的社会的关系，注定他的生活逃不出他所在的时代和社会的影响。所以，他的作品既然反映了他的生活或来源于他的生活，也就是说或多或少和他所处的社会有关，那自然就会反映那个社会的内在的价值观和风气等。

只是很粗略地写一下，逻辑比较混乱。现在时间紧张，也没有时间雕琢这种交流的话了。估计大家能看懂就凑合。

回头我打算写一下这个主题，还希望大家继续跟帖拍哦。尤其是   不怕开水堂的猪  ，由于你写过这个主题，我希望可以和你深入交流一下。呵呵

Arts, the highest understanding of the real world and the most effective way to express human being’s feelings and spiritual world, so-called the soul of human being, has been an indispensable part of people’s life. It is hard to imagine a world without music, painting or literature.

For their subtle fine expressional forms, arts usually seem virtual as to be compared with the real world. After all, their sources and original materials lie in the everyday life. Despite all representative forms they assume, the essence of arts originates from the real world. Music, for instance, originated from the folk songs of the ancient labor people, developed later in rituals and then passed from generation to generation. They didn’t come out suddenly without any realistic reason. Painting, which is an important part in the art gallery, is a direct form to reflect the world. You may find everything in our life in paintings such as trees, peoples or animals, etc..

As means to reveal the relationship between ideas and objectives, arts bridge the artists’ thoughts and behaviors. First of all, arts reflect artists’ perspectives of the world. The artists may show their favors or dislikes in their works. In a Chinese painting, a pine tree rooted in peculiar stones may symbolize the painter’s pursuing for noble personality that is characterized by never bowing to wrong authority or adhering to right principles in any cases. Secondly, what relationship lies between arts and those people who are not artist and don’t create arts directly? Do arts reveal their mental world in some certain levels? I would say, ” Yes.”  Though there are some arts cannot be well understood by the public, it is unreasonable to deny the aesthetic values of arts in general. Not only artists need arts. General people need arts as well. When people find art works that evoke their inner feelings, they may devoted themselves to develop and popularize such arts in their own ways. Then some fashions may be formed in such processes and some vogue of society may be shaped accordingly. As a result, people’s preferences may be presented by the extent of the population of some certain kinds of arts. Viewing such phenomena in another angle, arts present people’s aesthetic preferences, and then present the general aesthetic preferences and hidden ideas of the whole society.  

Furthermore, considering the relationship between the artists and the society, we may find out more indicators of the social function of arts. As social animals, no people can be independent of the influences of his temporal society. Consciously or unconsciously, the artists cannot make his works irrelative completely with his temporal society. Some certain facets of societies are determinate to be reflected in art works. A critic literature, for instance, may express the author’s dissatisfaction with the temporal government and reveal his ideal political modes in his works. Musicians may show their compliments to something through their works. Of course such inclination will not only constitute certain cultures of certain societies but also affect the developmental trends of societies. The artists’ works reveal their inclinations, and such inclinations usually indicate the impulses of societies.

As one famous proverb says,” Arts come from our real life but it is higher than our real life”. They may not reflect the real world directly, but it reveals the connotation of the life. In another word, arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
