Issue25. "Anyone can make things bigger and more complex. What requires real effort and courage is to move in the opposite direction—in other words, to make things as simple as possible."
任何人都可以把事情简单复杂化,但是需要真正努力和勇气的恰恰相反,也就是说应该把事情变得尽可能的简单。
复杂和简单
还是3小时。。。惭愧。。。 ;)
正文
I strongly agree with the statement above that it is to have things simple that requires true effort and courage rather than to make things bigger and complicated. For my part, through simplifying things we can not only figure out the concealing rules from complexities, but also acquire more conveniences to save our time and more efficiency to improve our lives. My argument goes as follows:
The progress of science is based on simplification, which requires people's more energies than complication. First of all, I tend to clarify the essential definitions and difference of complication and simplification. In fact, the former is to collect information as much as possible and represent lots of possibilities when people encounter something; yet the latter is to find the rules hiding behind the facts and complexities to serve a shorter way, demanding true effort and courage. To take mathematics as a good example, when asked what is "12x45", we may count the result out by multiplication in five second, but if our ancestors encountered the same problem" what is the total amount of 12 persons holding 45 cows, they might spend an hour in adding them one by one to get the answer. Apparently, as the deeper rule of addition, multiplication is more efficient in another sample way. Further, in order to resolve more complicated questions such as "what is the area of an ellipse", more effort are required to work out a rule over the multiplication by simplifying its awkward computation. Throughout the history of science, there are thousands of good examples like these illustrating the point that, simplification has been promoting science to get higher levels.
Besides the advance of science, our practical lives also call for a way in making things as sample as possible. In a sense, it seems that our societies and world are becoming more and more bigger and complex than ever before. In front of various productions, diversity of styles and multiplex choices, we are usually frustrated to spend long time to find our true needs and feel lost .It is necessary to simplify lots of things around us and ways to live. For example, fifteen years ago, with increasing development of computers, Internet was first applied, making more and more information available. Accordingly, the problem appeared: seeking for objects in a so huge information sea could cost people a whole day. People realized that the most important thing is to work out a method to simplify the searching progress to improve the efficiency of Internet, then, searching programs came out, helping people find their goals just by typing keywords in a second. Moreover, in other fields, such as automobile, simplification is even a final goal. Consider, cars may be much more complex than before, but only when they have sample rules to handle and compact interfaces with shortcut, they will be accepted by people and popular.
Of course, without collecting enough information and comprehensive analysis, so-called simplification on the surface will be harmful. For example, if a person attempts to draw a conclusion of the tendency in stock market, only by simplifying the data in several cases instead of listing all the complicated and subtle changes in a long tome, he/she would get a unavoidable failure.
In sum, simplification is crucial not only to the progress of science and society by forming rules but also to the promotion of our practical lives by bringing convenience. Therefore, we really need putting effort and courage to make things simple. |
