I basically agree with the speaker that major cities must be given the financial support ensured by their governments. For my part, however, the true reason for cities receiving the financial support is not the one provided above but the increasingly significant economic roles the major cities are playing. Further, in such an accelerating globalization background, are there more and more international cultures are generated and preserved in cities rather than a nation's cultural traditions.
Above all, it is unavoidable that a nation's cultural traditions could hardly be preserved and generated in cities in this age of the increasing development of globalization. Apparently, major cities are becoming more and more international with the huge impact of various cultures from all over the world, which greatly diminish the indigenous cultures' attractions, and meantime, impulse the rapid generation of new cultures. For example, in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, has become an international metropolis with so few traditional characteristics in twenty years that I could not figure out whether I stood in New York when I went back last year, because they were too similar! In contrast, I saw more high buildings of western classic style than Japanese civilian housing, more other contries' restaurants than sukiyaki rooms, office workers' faster walking than before and groups of teenagers talking about NBA instead of baseball. The silent interaction between international culture and national culture are gradually changing the preferences and rhythms of people in cities. In this case, the cultural traditions even lasting for thousands of years are facing the disorganization while the fresh cultures emerge and are generate to meet the temporary life. As a result, the culture in major cities becomes ambiguous in this sense. Cities could no longer preserve and generate national traditions.
On the other hand, it is really crucial for government to provide their major cities prior financial support to meet their need in that cities are playing more and more significant roles in the development of national economy. For one thing, major cities need financial supply to build up a economic center of nearby areas in order to impulse the overall improvement of small towns and countries around it. Consider, adjacent areas of Shenzhen were very depressed before. Ten years ago, the government decided to finance Shenzhen with a project named "city revival". The large amount of financial support from government was used in many fields that were short of funds to develop. Less the a year later, the increasingly improvement of the city brought about more and more chances of employment and commerce, which allured lots of business and young people to the city from the near areas. As a result, the economic potentialities between the major city and small towns were largely motivated. Now the whole region near Shenzhen has formed a strong union of economy. For another thing, major cities act as a bridge between a nation and the world. In the west, Shanghai, famous for its international charm, may be the most well-known city of China. Many international activities, such as APEC or F-1match, were held every year and cost millions of dollars. To acquire more long-term benefits, it is important for government to support the large bills.
In conclusion, major cities have to be provided enough financial support by their governments. But the true reason is that they are playing increasingly significant roles in national economy instead of that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated in them. |
