I agree with the statement above that scandals, with a stronger power than any speaker or reformer ever holds, could focus public attention on problems of our societies and individuals. For my part, scandals, if with responsible exposure of our lives, would not only contribute a lot to the healthy development of many realms but also benefit public in some aspects; although sometimes there are a number of fabled scandals doing harm to our societies.
Admittedly, some irresponsible scandals would undermine the stability of societies and destroy solidarity of public in a powerful and unique way. The increasingly accelerating development of media has been making information more available and making it possible to distribute scandals maybe only in a minute around the world. It is a commonplace, no matter in offices, or in home, or during shopping and having dinner, the more and more scandals updating everyday seems to be somewhat necessities in our lives. But the fact is that people seldom think whether these scandals are fabled and even malicious gossips disturbed by media just in order to allure public attention for some high profits, or not. As a result, we can see distrust arisen, beliefs shaken, wills destroyed. In these cases, scandals are somewhat harmful to societies. In contrast, differing from irresponsible scandals, those from reliable resources are really useful in many areas through responsible exposures of the seamy side of things.
On the one hand, scandals reveal the immoral behaviors of people, whether celebrities or authorities, so that the qualities and professional ethics of the relevant areas would be preserved and improved. For example, the corruption of the committee of Winter Olympic in 1996 was uncovered by an American report. The whole world was struck in a few days, and later, the officials involved in this case admitted their crimes. Then following this track, the chairman of Olympic planned a series of detection for every department of the organization. Subsequently, with more problems emerging, more people were involved into this scandal. The leaders in other athletics organizations were aware of the severity of this scandal and incident, and meanwhile, decided to renovate the old systems of their own organization to abstain the possible corruption and adjust the primary arrangement of members. As a result, from this scandal, a reformation over the whole sports field was generated and the sports ethics was protected and promoted.
On the other hand, public can also benefit something valuable from the awareness of scandals, which can alter public original mistaken recognition for something by disclosing the truth behind the phenomena on the surface. For instance, recently in China, public attention was focused on a medicine scandal concerning TongRenTang, a famous medicine company with at least 350 years old. The scandal revealed that a kind of Chinese traditional medicine made by TongRenTang did harm to people’s liver instead of no side-effects as the company declared. After a lawsuit, that medicine was proved detrimental with side effects against liver, although TongRenTang had a long history and high reputation among peoples in China. Just imagine, without the scandal questioning the authority of Chinese medicine and awaking public, how many people would suffer from this harmful medicine? Scandals with assured evidences prevent public from being cheated.
In conclusion, in a powerful and unique way, it is true that scandals without responsibilities do somewhat harm to our societies; in most cases, however, through disclosing the truth of the world scandals do contribute a lot to our society and public. |
