39. "The intellectual benefits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pursuing a university or college degree."
In my point of view, the intellectual benefits of attending a university or college involve knowledge, technology and more importantly, the proper way of thinking and the perspectives on life and value. Therefore, I strongly oppose to the statement that most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pursuing a university or college degree.
Regarding the intellectual benefits of attending a university or college, the purpose of university or college education, on the point of individual development, far beyond pursuing a degree, is not only to load the students' mind with knowledge and technology that can be applied to future career, but also to perfect the students with proper way of thinking, and right perspectives on life and value. First of all, mere knowledge and technology themselves are no longer the focus in advanced education as they once were in primary education. As a Mathematics majored student, in our core courses, professors do not only prove theories step by step just as what have been written in textbooks, but also enable us to recognize how these theories come into being from trivial original problems in life, and ultimately encourage us to create solutions to existing mathematical problems or explore new ones on our own. Therefore, only learning theories or facts by heart is far from enough. As the focus of advanced education shifts, offering students measures that contribute to their extensive learning outside universities and colleges, or the concept of "lifelong learning" is more and more advocated. Education in humanity and social science disciplines enable students to scrutinize and more profoundly comprehend the history of human beings, and consequently apply what is learned to the historic revolution our society is going to experience. And education in natural science develops students' capacity in reasoning, logical thinking and creating which is perpetually valuable in their future life.
As a matter of fact, in the absence of instructions from teachers and professors, or without the communication with people devoting to the same career, we are not able to truly master the ideas behind the context, if we don't have difficulty understanding them in books mainly for two reasons. First of all, since university or college education is actually designed to excellent students who are proved to have the ability to further research on a certain discipline, the depth of knowledge taught is surely beyond the average capacity of the society, which means "most people" are not able to even accomplish the apprehension of the content in advanced education by themselves, needless to say developing any profound understanding. Secondly, in this modern society of rapidly developing science and technology, and frequently emerging social problems, scientific researches become so intricate that require collective talents, and social problems become so complicated that oblige concerted efforts. Thus, it is only through instructions and communications that individual talent will be grown to meet the needs of our society. And university and college just provide the precious opportunity and perfect academic atmosphere to achieve it.
Moreover, genuinely achieving the proper way of thinking and gaining the right perspectives on life and value play an even more important role in our life. Without them, the purpose of university and college education is seriously incomplete. And this crucial part indeed can be achieved through the communication with highly educated teachers and professors who have abundant experience in how to direct students towards this goal, and the exchanges of ideas with fellow students of dynamic thoughts from all kinds of disciplines.
In sum, the advanced education, whose mission is to load the students' mind with knowledge and technology, and more crucially, to perfect the students with proper way of thinking, and perspectives on life and value, is able to leave a profound impact on the whole life of students, which can hardly be achieved through the way of studying or reading by individuals alone. |
