The speaker claims that reassurance is the mere function of science while upset is the mere one of art, and therein lies their values. In my view the statement is too extreme, both for science and art. It defines the functions and values of science and arts each in an arbitrary and straightforward way, which is not the case in fact.

Generally speaking, both science and art serve to prompt the reforms and innovations for the whole society. As is known to all, when it comes to reforms, they are related to overthrowing the laggard and banal things as well as introducing into innovatory and fashionable ones. In this connection, both science and art play an upset role in advancement for mankind. On the other hand, the majority of improvement of scientific technologies and most inventions are meant to provide inhabitants with better living conditions; while art, covering a wide range of painting, drama, literature, architecture and so on, not only enriches our daily life but also offers an aesthetic appreciation, and therefore science and art both serve a function of reassurance.

Consider first the intent and value of science. The final objective of science is to discover the truths of the universe and explain the phenomena we observe in the physical world. A great many fields in science such as physics and mathematics, the laws and principals of which provide a sense of reassuring by means of interpreting the puzzles and problems around us, and thus leading us to a more orderly and clear world. While at the same time, science has experienced great changes in recent centuries, among which the concept of the infinite universe, the evolvement of human-beings and the theory of relativity has upset the conventional ideas about the planet we live in. In short, the value of science lies in its pursuit of verities, whether it is reassuring or upset.

Secondly, when it comes to the purpose of art, as Georges Braque, a well-known French painter once said: "Arts disturb us." Many works of art, such as paintings, symphonies or poems, with expressions of strong feelings, usually invoke a striking even furious feelings among people, especially the ones which condemn the unfairness and darkness of the contemporary society. These works, most often regarded as grave threats to people who merely want peace and entertainment, are against by the masses and forbidden by the authorities. Admittedly, art is sometimes considered as provocative means to awaken people to be aware of the ugly aspects of human nature, which would not otherwise be possible.

On the other hand, in most cases art is created to provide pleasure, enjoyment, and beauty. Take the celebrated portraiture of Mona Lisa for example, which is recognized as one of the most outstanding existent works of art. Many people bask or gain a sense of peace in gazing at her magic smile, and there is nothing to upset the viewer in this case. Similarly, a series of frescos with themes of the Christian redemption and salvation accomplished during the mediaeval period, usually representing the Madonna and Child, serve a function of reassurance rather than upset. Had there not being a variety of arts we feast on today, our lives would pale and our society would become a dull and unimaginative one.

In conclusion, the author over generalizes the functionof science and the purpose of art, as well as ignore their other internal values. Being aware of its dualism, we are required to take an overall view of this problem and think over it on a case-by-case basis.
