------题目------
183 "As we acquire more knowledge, things do not become more comprehensible, but more complex and more mysterious."
------正文------
Almost every great man has become aware that the more he learned, the better he saw how much there was still to be learned. And so did Newton, who ever said‘I seem to have been like a boy playing on the seashore. I have amused myself by now and then finding a smooth pebble or a pretty shell, but the great ocean of truth still lies before me unknown and unexplored’Increasing complexity and mystery might be a main impetus for them to make more efforts on further studies and researches. That might be why the arguer states that we feel more complex and more mysterious while acquiring more knowledge, which I fundamentally agree on.
In the movie God must be crazy, we know that the only human beings in the Kalahari are a few Bushmen, who don’t live in tribes but roam about in small family groups. They must be the most carefree and contented people in the world, possibly because they know nothing about science and modern world and own nothing. Bushmen live a simple life without machines or equipments, and their relationship is also simple: no order, no hierarchy. So the world in their eyes is much simpler and thus ‘comprehensible’ in a sense and certainly more backward. Compared with their small groups, our modern society seems to be incomprehensible with the development of science and technology. Why the more knowledge we learn, the more complex and mysterious things appear? There might be, in my observation, several reasons as follow.
In the process of discovery, we generally experience two stages, from ignorance to awareness of phenomena and then to capture of essences. People may feel excited and elated when discovering phenomena, while at latter stage they inevitably meet with difficulties and temporarily have the feeling that things seem to become more complex and mysterious than expected. Astronomy had been the main task of augurs in form of constellation until hundreds of astronomers made great efforts to explore the infinite universe. But as we were, more than once, told that the universe is much larger than thought by Copernicus, Bruno, Galileo and other scientists, facing the sky we felt that man is too small and powerless to know everything of each star and planet of this infinite and mysterious universe. Today, we even feel frightened when questions like whether there exist aliens on other planets and whether they would attack the human beings as shown in science fiction movies come to our minds. Furthermore, though we take it for granted that we capture essence of things, when it comes to make use of it we are faced with the same situation. It has been reported that human beings are successful in cloning sheep, but we are facing with the dilemma of choosing between ethics and scientific development in terms of human being cloning.
In other realms like ethics, law and philosophy, researches unavoidably have the parallel feeling. People are bombarded with increasing information and technological demand, a brainstorm in modern society has been taking place. People are seduced by more lures as fame, wealth, and former outlook on life and evaluation standard have gradually changed. Intensive competition and high pressure make people’s hearts distorted. People become strange and mysterious to each other and relationship is not simple any more. Admittedly, being faced with such group of people, things for lawyers, philosophers and moralists are really complex and mysterious.
If we compare the known part of the world to the space within a circle, the unknown part of the world around the circle grows as the circle of our knowledge expands. If we think that the significance of lives is to discover the unknown part of the world, in the process of which we gain happiness, there might be no need to feel frustrated about the increasingly more complex and more mysterious world that confront. What’s more, we are becoming better equipped to cope with the problems that emerge.
这是我写的第四篇issue, 用了将近3个小时,很是苦恼。 我是不是应该从现在开始进行限时了呀 :( |
