Isaac Newton once said: “Practical doing is the only way to identify the truth.” So, more and more people devoted themselves to the research and some people including the speaker hold the attitude that money spend on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial. It seems exactly true sometimes but I can hardly completely agree with this opinion.

To begin with, the results of the research are often controversial when the method of the research is contentious, and at this time, money spend on research is sometimes not a good investment. Because the research is a practical doing to some extent, and its result which used by us to examine the theory is a present of the truth. However, it may not represent the real world if the method of research is contentious. Thus the research will lose its own value. Confronting this situation, I think we should not invest on it.

In addition, it may not be a good investment even when the results of the research are clear without controversial factors and whether it is a good investment sometimes depends on the research itself. For example, if a person wants to do a research to go around the earth by the remote ship for proving the facts that the earth is round. Should you support him on the money for his “great ideal”? Of course not. Because, this is a useless research, nearly all the people including the man himself have no oppugn on the theory that the earth is round and the research has already been done by the former person. We can see that the kind of research is an important factor which can determine whether spending money on it is a good investment and we should not invest on it when the research itself is of no use.

Moreover, it may not be a good investment even when the results of the research are clear without controversial and the research is useful. Due to the fact that good is a relative word, whether it deserved the money spending on it depends on the background information of the investor. Take Congo for example. As is known to all, Congo is an African country, and like other Africans, their people are very poverty. Many of them can not have three meal everyday. Hundreds of diseases troubled on them. Nearly one hundred children die from the starvation, disease, and so forth every week. On the other hand, the aviation is a new area which is deserved for people to explore. Confronting the situation that the technology is growing rapidly, should the government of Congo spend more money on the research of the new technology? There is no doubt that they should not do this. What they should do is to put more money into the services which can change the life of their people, making them live in a good environment, at least not dieing from the starvation, and having the basic medical treatment.

To sum up, I know that the research is very important for us. But I think spending money on the research all the time is a little arbitrary to some extent, and sometimes it is not a good investment. Therefore, we had better take more careful thought before making the decision and using the money more reasonably.
