"It is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth
all the time. Complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician."



The duty as a political leader is to make policy and administer the public affairs in the interests of the nationwide citizens in democratic society so that the nation can achieve prosperity and moreover keep its people apart from poverty, war ,tyranny,  disease and all of enemies of human being. Accordingly, the criterion for judging an effective political leader is how well he or she fulfills the duty. Based on this, in my opinion, as the speaker claims, it is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time, and also complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician.
         
One does not have to go very far and just looks at some critical situations, which a nation may be often in, to understand that it is very necessary to withhold the truth and even tell the falseness for an effective political leader. This may be illustrated by comparing the malfunction of a plane during a flight with a national critical case, in which it is needed not to tell the truth. When some malfunctions of a plane come during its flight, if they could be repaired in time, it is necessary to withhold the truth or tell the falseness when some passengers ask. If telling the truth, it is often likely to leads to panic for the reason that it is impossible to explain all the situations in details in a short time to avoid the panic, and consequently some flusters may disturb or even abort the repair, which leads to an air tragedy,. Yet it is fully avoidable if tell the falseness. Such plane malfunction is analogous to the national critical case in which not to tell the truth. Some true information from a political leader may bring the public a panic and flusters of the whole nation. In this case, just as similar to the malfunction of a plane, the political leader should bring optimism and courage for the people, not the truth. At the same time, as a political leader, he or she should assume all the pressure and solve them.

However, if the public has known the truth regardless of how pessimistic or difficult it is, cheating could induce that nor the leader neither the government would not be trusted. In this case, to be honest and telling the truth would be beneficial, which can unite all of the people to conquer the difficulties. A compelling example is the "First Inaugural Address" of Franklin Roosevelt president of USA. That is a very special and critical days when he descended the seat of president. The whole nation faced the severe economic depression. What in his inaugural address is-“This is preeminently the time to speak truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly” gains the understanding and support of the people of the whole nation, which is essential to victory over the economy depression. It is the honesty and speaking truth that unite all of people of the nation tightly and firmly to overcome the difficulties and lead to prosperity of USA ultimately.  

In sum, complete honesty and telling the truth all the time are not wise as a political leader, also a core role in the nation, who serves his or her nation, and citizens of the nation. How well he or she fulfills the duty mentioned before is the entire key for this issue.  So, for an effective political leader, whether or not to tell the truth depends fully on the special situation he or she facing.

The whole nation faced the severe economic depression. What in his inaugural address is-“This is preeminently the time to speak truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly” gains the understanding and support of the people of the whole nation, which is essential to victory over the economy depression. It is the honesty and speaking truth that unite all of people of the nation tightly and firmly to overcome the difficulties and lead to prosperity of USA ultimately.

首先，我是赞同作者的观点，即一个有效的政治家不可能永远讲真话，同时完全的诚实也并不是有用的特性。但我中间那段是说明有些情况下是需要讲真话更有效果。最后的结论是是否讲真话是由政治家所面临的特殊问题和情形所决定的。
难道大家看来是整个文章自己在扇自己耳光？还是没有表达清楚？或者是论证不够coherent??
