Is the function of our formal education to free the mind and the spirit or to restrain our minds and spirits? The speaker agued that formal education has made a restraint role in developing individual’s mind. Admittedly, in the process of education, directors may utilize some restraint means to control students’ deeds, however, I believe the intention of educations by no means lies in restraining students’ mind and spirit, and  the speaker’s contention has gone fairly against the law of civilization of education and overlooked the significance of education.
Admittedly, formal education shows us moral sense of the society and basic physical laws, which might restrain our doings. As we enter the primary school, we would be taught to follow the disciplines of the school and the laws of the communities and nations. We are no longer the fresh boy or girl as we did before. However, the disciplines and laws we are taught to follow are the necessities to stabilize our communities and societies, which ensure our liberties. We humanities are born social animals that we should follow the laws that our freedom is relative as we should not offend the rights of others in society, that means, nowhere promise individual’s spirit and mind absolutely free, including the schools that give formal education.
However, our educations advocate the ability of creation and original views of students rather than restrain them to follow the predecessors’ mind absolutely. Nearly in every university in China, foundations for original experiment are set to encourage students thinking creatively and making the fresh ideas out. As our technology and knowledge of science is advancing significantly, our education has taken actions to set students’ mind and spirit free and encourage creativities to meet the needs of society. Therefore, Old methods such as reciting and repeat writing are no longer advocated in modern education and more individuals with fresh mind and spirit are being cultivated in the process of education which has been filled with fresh academic atmosphere..
Further more, the final intention of education is to strengthen one’s personality and independent ability of thinking. The restraint of mind and spirit as the speaker mentioned has gone out of the way of the intention human education. Our education tends to provide chances and a circumstance for individuals where set courses and training to enhance one’s ability of think independently and cultivate one’s mind to develop health personality. Though sometimes laws and disciplines which prevent students’ doings and minds deviating and offending others are set and have a restraint role on students, in the long term, education is set to strengthen individual’s personality and enhance the society’s civilization. To restrain one’s mind an spirit is by no means the purpose and function of education, However, the restraint of one’s personalities is completely against the intention of education and even the law of civilization development.
In final analysis, education might utilize some restraining means during the procession, such as setting disciplines and raise critical remark, in deed, the final purpose of education to strengthen one’s personality and independence is never changed. The speaker’s contention has gone far from the true role of education. Besides, as our development of technology and civilization is advancing significantly, the methods and ideas of education is facing a revolutionary and challenging situation, which left us more to think over.
