Road Surface Defect Condition Monitoring using Smartphones
Road surface deteriorates gradually over a long period of time due to various natural and artificial causes, impairing not only the comfort of users and road safety, but also transportation economic efficiency. Technically, road surface defects (e.g., potholes and cracks) may cause vehicles bumping. The induced-vibration can then be captured and measured by accelerometer and gyroscope sensors embedded in the smartphone.

In this project, we envisage that a smartphone equipped with accelerometer, gyroscope and GPS sensors can be used to collect information about road surface condition on a daily basis, instead of using specialized equipment for road survey on a multi-annual basis. Data analysis algorithms will be applied to the collected data to identify road surface deterioration and the detected defects will be marked on Google Map. Furthermore, a predictive model will be constructed to predict road surface deterioration on the certain vulnerable road segments, aiming to optimize road infrastructure maintenance and minimize road safety & serviceability risk.

Eligibility
Candidates should at least hold a bachelor degree in Computer Science or Civil / Transportation engineering, or will obtain one before July 2022. Candidates with a master degree in civil engineering or computer science are encouraged to apply. In addition, English certificate (e.g. IELTS / TOEFL) and international research experiences are preferred. Early application is highly recommended.






Biography:
Dr. Zili Li holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelor in Civil Engineering from Tongji University in China. He is the Theme Leader in Geotechnics of Civil Engineering Research Association of Ireland (CERAI). He has established wide international research collaborations with many academic institutions and companies including: Cambridge University, UC Berkeley, CERN, Transportation Infrastructure Ireland (TII), London Underground, Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) and etc.

Dr. Dapeng Dong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Maynooth University. He holds a PhD in Computer Science and a MSc in Software and Systems for Mobile Networks at The National University of Ireland, Cork. His research interests include efficient big data processing and cloud computing. Prior to his current position, he joined the SFI CONNECT Centre of Ireland as a senior postdoctoral researcher with his research focus on edge computing; and Boole Centre for Research in Informatics (BCRI) of Ireland as a work-package leader of an EU Horizon 2020 project, leading the project implementation team and co-designing next-generation cloud architectures. Subsequently, he joined the State Street Advanced Technology Centre (SSATC) as a senior postdoctoral researcher working on integration of cloud computing, big data analytics systems and FinTech technologies.
