Issue 227

It is more important to allocate money for immediate, existing social problems than to spend it on long-term research that might help future generations.

There are so many problems to deal with in the modern society that are immediate: unemployment, natural disaster etc. We also face the long-term research tasks that will make our future generation live better.Of course, both of them are important, but the money is limited, which of them should the society place first? I think the society should pay more attention on immediate society problems.

Admittedly, the society is benefit from long-term research. Long-term research can bring out new science and technology.Without the work of Von Newman and other scientists, computer science and technology would still be Babbage's dream. Long term research can also help the society to avoid potential danger. Most of the asian-pacific countries have established tsunami forecast system that can inform people who live near the coastline the latest news of tsunami. If the Indian Ocean countries could have built a similar system, the recent tsunami would not taken so many lives.

As I mentioned the tsunami, I remember one story in Aesop's Fables. One day a child was playing on the bank, unfortunately he fell into the river.Just then an old man passed by saw the boy, he scolded at him: "Fool boy, Haven't you been told not to play on the bank? I'll tell your mother then." The boy replied: "I see, but please save me." When time and money are limited, what should the society do? Do just as the old man did? The society should place the urgent social problem first. Take the recent tsunami for example, after the tsunami, what should the international society do first? Help to set up a new tsunami system for the Indian Ocean countries? It is important really, but the survivor need clean wanter, food, medicine and new homes.Of course the society should settle this urgent problem before starting the long-term research.

In addition, what is the reason for long-term research? To solve existing social problems more completely and quickly is an important reason and immediate social problems also stimulate the long-term research. If we allocate more money for immediate social problems, we actually use some of it in long-term research. At the beginning of the 21st century, the society encounted the Y2k problem: the confusion of 1900 and 2000 in old-fashioned computer. Scientists also brought along long-term computer research when the solving of the immediate problem is going on. Long-term research can get experience from settlement of immediate social problems. It is killing two birds with one stone to allocate more money for immediate problems.

To sum up, the society should allocate more money on solving the present social problems, which are more urgent and also can supply experience for the long-term research that might help the future generations. We also should leave something to our future generations so that they can be independent enough to develop human's future.

Issue
主题:the society should pay more attention on immediate society problems.
B1:the society is benefit from long-term research
B2: society should settle this urgent problem before starting the long-term research.
B3: It is killing two birds with one stone to allocate more money for immediate problems.

Admittedly, the society is benefit from long-term research. Long-term research can bring out new science and technology.Without the work of Von Newman and other scientists, computer science and technology would still be Babbage's dream. babbage's dream? Moreover, Long term research can also help the society to avoid potential danger. Most of the asian-pacific countries have established tsunami forecast system that can inform people who live near the coastline the latest news of tsunami. If the Indian Ocean countries could have built a similar system, the recent tsunami would not taken so many livesaway . There are so many problems to deal with in the modern society that are immediate: unemployment, natural disaster etc.

It is important really, but the survivor need clean wanter, food, medicine and new homes.Of course the society should settle this urgent problem before starting the long-term research.

In addition, what is the reason for long-term research? To solve existing social problems more completely and quickly is an important reason and immediate social problems also stimulate the long-term research. 这里应该好好理解一下题目说的long-term research that might help future generations.

Long-term research can bring out new science and technology.Without the framework for modern computer and lots of basic algorithms developed by Von Newman and other scientists, we would still have to use abacus for computation. Moreover, long-term research can also help to avoid potential danger. Most of the asian-pacific countries have established tsunam forecast system based on the long-term research of undersea crust movements by geographers. If the Indian Ocean countries could have built a similar system, the recent tsunami would not taken so many lives away.

Unfortunately, time is not always enough for both solving of existing social problems and long-term research, therefore the society must choose a more urgent one. I remember a story in Aesop's Fables that just fit the situation. One day a child was playing on the bank, suddenly he fell into the river.Just then an old man passed by saw the boy, he scolded at him: "Fool boy, Haven't you been told not to play on the bank? I'll tell your mother then." The boy replied: "I see, but please save me first." It tell us to pick up urgent social problem before long-term research. Take the recent tsunami for example, after the strike, what should the international society do first? Starting the long-term research of the crust under Indian Ocean? It is important really, but now the survivors need clean wanter, food, medicine and new houses. Of course the international society should settle these urgent problems before exploration of the seafloor which may collect some information for the new tsunam forecast system.

In addition, money would also be not sufficient enough to support both the settlement of existing problems and the long-term research. Because of that it is important to allocating more money for immediate social problems rather than long-term research since solving of existing problems can stimulate the long-term research but the opposite is not always true. During settling immediate social problems, the long-term research would get great deal of data, ideas and experiences. At the beginning of the 21st century, the society encounted the Y2k problem: the confusion of 1900 and 2000 in old-fashioned computer. After the Y2k problem, computer scientists and statistists got a great quantity of data and experience which ought to have cost them a lot. It is killing two birds with one stone to allocate more money for immediate problems.

To sum up, the society should allocate more money on solving the present social problems, which are more urgent and can also supply lots of essentials for the long-term research. We also should leave something to our future generations so that they can be independent enough to develop human's future.
