94"Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated."

16.17
I fundamentally agree with the author's statement that university should offer students various courses outside the student's major course of study. It is no doubt that without acquiring a variety of knowledge an individual will only become a machine which functions in the society, rather than a truly educated person. Nevertheless, I would caution that extending this statement too far will go to the other end and still harm the society..

The primary reason why I agree with the statement is that the purpose of education, or the meaning of truly educated, is to develop the personality of an individual and the significance of him to himself and to others. A variety of courses other than courses in one's major field may help a lot to shape one's personality and characters. For example, an electrical engineering major should learn something about literature, philosophy and history besides the courses in the major field. Although in someone's viewpoint, these courses does not have any "practical" use because they don't offer job-related skills, but these courses will complement an individual some other benefits which help him shape his personality and character. Literature tells us how beautiful language is; philosophy teaches us the meaning of life; history let us know the past and therefore help us predict the future. In other words, the study in these area help to broaden our eyeshot and deepen our understanding of the nature and the society.

More over, in this changing and increasingly competitive world, one's knowledge acquired in university is far more enough to ensure a future career. Actually, the boundary between a major and another is so vague that one college student is not sure what job he will take after graduation. The life-long learning belief is rooted in our mind and we know that unless keep learning through out our life we may be eliminated by the society. Nowadays the employers tend to hire people who have creative ideas and the capability to master a skill in a short period of time instead of people who can only master in a single field. Therefore the significance of obtaining some basic skills such as logical thinking, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving turn out to be obvious. Those subjects such as physics, art, psychology, or even geography, provide these skills. For instance, through studying physics we acquire the ability of logical thinking; through studying art we learn creative thinking, through studying psychology we learn how to understand others.

However, the call for a broad educational experience as the path to be truly educated comes with one important caveat. If one just dabbles at a hodge-podge of academic offerings, he is a mere dilettante in those academic areas. Compared with some students who excel at one major area, he is less competitive in job finding. In other words, he falls behind his peers who is expert in one specific area at the beginning.

In the final analysis, to become truly educated one indeed need a broad courses of study, which is beneficial to himself as well as to his professional career. But we should also note that in order to be more competitive in the job market, one must excel his own major. The significance is how to strike a proper balance between them.

(注意人称单复数,主谓一致!)In other words, the study in these area areashelp to broaden our eyeshot and deepen our understanding of the nature and the society.这里不如直接说对于更好理解自己major,因为你讨论的就是要不要学专业以外的东西。

More over(合在一起!moreover), in this changing and increasingly competitive world, one's knowledge acquired in university is far more enough 是想说远远不能满足未来工作的需要么?这样说是这个意思?存疑!to ensure a future career.
