"The depth of knowledge to be gained from books is much richer and broader than what can be learned from direct experience."
Is the knowledge from books much richer and broader than from direct experience?题目说的是the depth of knowledge,你这里说的knowledge,是一回事吗? The speaker claims so, however, as far as I am concerned, I disagree this assertion for the following reasons.
Admittedly, knowledge from books forms a very important source of our knowledge. Because we have no enough time and energy to gain all knowledge from our own direct experience all the time, books serve as a useful tool to inform us some useful theories and general ideas about our life and world. From elementary school to university, we learn knowledge that is fundamental to our future career from our textbooks; in our daily life, we acquire knowledge about life and the world by reading books, magazines and newspapers. But as an old saying says, “Experience is the best teacher”, only acquiring knowledge from books there are still a lot of things we cannot accomplish. To learn swimming, it is useless to be absorbed in reading skills written in books. Only when you learn it in a swimming pool, can you make it. This is true for many other things, such as driving a car, riding a bicycle, operating a machine.
However, we can’t learn everything from books. In human history, we human beings learn much knowledge from our direct experience. Primitive people learned skills hand by hand which is the way they were handed down from one generation to another. In today’s rapidly developed developing吧,你想说快速发展还是高度发达的社会啊?society, we will meet many new problems that are not mentioned in books. Under this circumstance, all we can do is to learn from our direct experience. I am carrying a digital image processing project now, although I have read many books and literatures about my project I still encounter new problems, which have never encountered by other people. To solve these problems I have to provide my own methods for them.
Furthermore, knowledge from direct experience can not only check out the theories gained from books but also enhance our understanding of them. There is an old Chinese saying that practice is the only criterion of inspecting the truth. So not all knowledge from books is credible, some of them are even false. When Aristotle wrote in his transcripts that the earth is the center of our planets, no one doubts this for centuries. However, when Galileo read about it, he did not suspect it at first, but when he made some observation and research, he found it is not the truth. Then comes the new theory—Sun center theory. In schools, teachers will give students homework, by doing these homework students will learn how to use book knowledge to solve actual problems, which will help them understand those knowledge fully and deeply.
In sum, gaining knowledge from books or from direct experience is not exclusive. The former is an important source of our knowledge, but it is not the only source of our knowledge, because we can’t learn everything from books. The latter is a very important supplement to the former. Without knowledge from direct experience, it is impossible for us to get a real understanding of knowledge from books, and we can’t learn how to apply this knowledge to real world situations.
