36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
TS:
Can the greatness of individuals be decided by those who live after them or by their contemporaries? Their contemporaries may share the same values with them of the same era. However, I fundamentally agree that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them. Time is the best way to justify individuals’ greatness. The later generations have a more objective and accurate judgment on the individuals than their contemporaries.

Later generations may not be influenced by the some kind of interests and other facts of themselves. However, the contemporaries' judgments are easily affected by their subjective opinions. For example, Socrates, a great Greek philosopher, was sentenced to death, just because he announced his philosophical ideas in public, which offended the authority's interests. Then and there Socrates' ideas were not accepted by his contemporaries and he was even regarded as a criminal. Nevertheless, now things have changed that people are thoroughly recognized his ideas and consider him as one of the greatest philosophers. Thus, later generations have more impartial judgments on the greatness of our ancestors, which indicates that the contemporaries have a limited judgments that may lead them to unwarranted conclusions.

The contemporaries that lived in the same social circumstances and era even space with the individuals we judge of are readily influenced by the social trends of that time. In this case their judgments are not equitable, sometimes even incorrect. For instance, in the Middle Ages the ecclesiae claimed that all witches, considered as evil, should be burned to death. Then adherents throughout Europe began to franticly slaughter those women that they considered as witches no matter what the women really were. People of that time thought what the ecclesiae decided were all correct and advocated without any doubts regardless how ridiculer decisions they made. Obviously, present people are definitely opposed to what the ecclesiae decided at that time and regard the Middle Ages as the Dark Ages, during which the truth was distorted and humanity was neglected. Therefore, the later generations have a more accurate and equitable judgments on the previous individuals without the influences of social elements of that time.

The later generations judge the former individuals during a long period of time throughout the history, by contrast to the contemporaries; their conclusions may have more present meanings. As Posner, the famous founder of law and literature movements, concludes that in the literary history it is those works that are appreciated, remembered and inherited generation by generation are real masterpieces. Take Jade as an example. His works were regarded as masterpieces by his contemporaries, while presently what he wrote is not accepted by most of us. With his works becoming to be forgotten, Jade is getting to lose the honor of master. Thus, contrary to the contemporaries, the later generations' judgments have more significant modern meanings, which may instruct us to have a better understanding of our previous individuals.

In sum up, the judgments of contemporaries are not objective and impartial due to different influences of the standards or authorities of their time. With the evaluating of the history modern people may have a more objective, fair and significant judgments of our ancestors.

The later generations judge the former individuals during a long period of time throughout the history, by contrast to the contemporaries; their conclusions may have more present meanings. (As Posner, the famous founder of law and literature movements, concludes that in the literary history it is those works that are appreciated, remembered and inherited generation by generation are real masterpieces.) Take Jade as an example.

In sum up(in sum/to sum up), the judgments of contemporaries are not objective and impartial due to different influences of the standards or authorities of their time. With the evaluating of the history modern people may have a more objective, fair and significant judgments of our ancestors.

Can the greatness of individuals be decided by those who live after them or by their contemporaries? Their contemporaries may share the same values with them of the same era. However用一个however在这里感觉不够smooth, I fundamentally agree that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them. Time is the best way to justify individuals’ greatness. The later generations have a more objective and accurate judgment on the individuals than their contemporaries.

Later generations may not be influenced by the some kind sof interests and other facts of themselves. However, the contemporaries' judgments are easily affected by their subjective opinions. For example, Socrates, a great Greek philosopher, was sentenced to death, just because he announced his philosophical ideas in public, which offended the authority's interests.
