Issue122 "We owe almost all our knowledge not to people who have agreed, but to people who have disagreed."
正文:
Do we owe almost all our knowledge not to people who have agreed, but to people who have disagreed? The speaker claim so. I concede that we gain much knowledge from different ideas. Otherwise, in my view, the speaker’s assertion goes too far by overlooking that undue disagreement might impede wisdom advancing and the agreement can also serve to knowledge accumulation.

The benefits of disagreement for knowledge are not deniable. Indeed, it is the very fundament that our knowledge advance. For supporting examples one should look no further than the history of science. Consider disagreeing the notion that the Earth was in a fixed position at the center of the universe, Copernicus paved for the way for the corroborating observations of Galileo a century later, and ultimately for Newton's principles of gravity upon which all modern science depends.

Otherwise, under some circumstances undue disagreement can also impede developing knowledge, especially when the overwhelming power insists on its wrong opinion. For instance, in the medium era, the inquisition persecutes many innocent people whose ideas opposing it and impedes diffusing some enlightened wisdom which is not in accord with it. This also occurs when most people disagree with the correct idea which few people hold. For example, today, the notion that eating much meat is helpful to health still prevail although it has many infects in that the force of disagreement of majority affects the society’s knowledge system.

Acknowledging the many benefits and sometime harm of disagreement, however, we should not overlook how agreement propels the human knowledge, which also plays a great role in our wisdom accumulation, whether by infirming us and goading us to gain further knowledge, or by providing the more profound knowledge.

First, those who have the same viewpoints with us can also contribute to our knowledge accumulation by giving us confidence about our own knowledge and urging us to make more effort for profound knowledge. At personal level, through parents and teachers’ agreements children augment their basic knowledge step by step; otherwise, they might lose interest in learning and gain nothing as a result. In addition, at the science and art realm, appropriate recognition would give the genial inspiration to continue his or her creations, some of which are so obscure that most people tend to laugh at them. One can go no further to see this point by examining the role played by the Nobel Praise in the academia and art field.

Moreover, not only gain we confidence and enthusiasm for probing further knowledge indirectly, but we achieve profound knowledge directly, in that our knowledge system is an accumulating one. For example, people agreeing with the right knowledge make great effort on compiling, coordinating, and disseminating them, during which more profound ideas are added. Indeed, any theoretic can not remain what it is original.

To sum up, I concede that we gain much from people disagree. Otherwise, people whose ideas we share in common also contribute to our knowledge accumulation, by give us confidence, enthusiasm and profound knowledge.

Indeed, it is the very fundament that our knowledge advance It is an important factor that promote our knowledge and technology levels. For supporting examples one should look no further than the history of science. For example, in perspective of science, …… Consider disagreeing the notion that the Earth was in a fixed position at the center of the universe, Copernicus paved for the way for the corroborating observations of Galileo a century later, and ultimately for Newton's principles of gravity upon which all modern science depends. 1。

Otherwise,这里的otherwise意义比较低多,建议还了,用what’s more under some circumstances undue disagreement can also impede developing knowledge, especially when the overwhelming power insists on its wrong opinion. For instance, in the medium era, the inquisition persecutes many innocent people whose ideas opposing it and impedes diffusing some enlightened wisdom which is not in accord with it. This also occurs when most people disagree with the correct idea which few people hold. For example, today, the notion 也可以用idea,什么的that eating much meat is helpful to health still prevail although it has many infects in that the force of disagreement of majority affects the society’s knowledge system.

Otherwise, people whose ideas we share in common also contribute to our knowledge accumulation, by give us confidence, enthusiasm and profound knowledge

小结:

另外,for supporting examples one should look no futher than 是否太罗嗦?

Do we owe almost all our knowledge not to people who have agreed, but to people who have disagreed? The speaker claim so. I concede that we gain much knowledge from different ideas. Otherwise, in my view, the speaker’s assertion goes too far by overlooking that undue disagreement might impede wisdom advancing and the agreement can also serve to knowledge accumulation.

The benefits of disagreement for knowledge are not deniable. First and foremost, the controversies can help people find the underlying fallacies of our ideas or perspectives which people may often overlook For example, Before Silent Spring, which is written by Rachel Cason, exposed the dark side of science, nearly all Americans believed that science was a force for good and the destruction of nature can no longer be called progress. thanks to her brave disagreement with the mainstream perspective, we can find our fallacies and not begin to pay attention to nature too late. Moreover, Disagreement inspires us to learn more. when encountering certain theory opposing ours, we tend to select more proof to confirm us and learn more whether at last we find the former one we cherish correct or not. If all of us start agreeing with the existing theories and with each other, there will be no inspiration for us to explore further. in addition, disagreement gives us new angles for watching things, even when it goes wrong. accordingly, it is the disagreement that human knowledge advance upon.
acknowledging that most disagreement serve well to purposes of knowledge developing, we could not overstate its benefit. However, under some circumstances undue disagreement can also impede developing knowledge, when the overwhelming power insists on its wrong opinion, and when most people disagree with the correct idea which few people hold, and when the debate becomes irrational denouncement or personal attack. For instance, in the medium era, the inquisition persecutes many innocent people whose ideas opposing it and impedes diffusing some enlightened wisdom which is not in accord with it. The agreement from inquisition are destructive to knowledge. This also occurs when most people disagree the incorrect perspective. For example, today, the unture idea that eating much meat is helpful to health still prevails in that the force of disagreement of majority affects the society’s knowledge system. This kind of disagree can submerge the sound idea. finally, the irrational disagreement between shrews seems meaningless as well. Thus, we can not overvalue the disagreement by noting that undue disagreement can also impede developing knowledge.

Another problem with the statement is that it undervalues the benefits of agreement , which also plays a great role in our wisdom accumulation, whether by infirming us and goading us to gain further knowledge, or by providing the more profound knowledge. In fact, without agreement from other, we hardly continue our further research.

In addition, not only achieve we confidence and enthusiasm for probing further knowledge indirectly, but we achieve profound knowledge directly, in that our knowledge system is an accumulating one. People agreeing with the right knowledge make great effort on compiling, coordinating, and disseminating them, during which more profound ideas are added. Most academic systems have been improved and perfected by those numerous people who agree, and it remains the same in the art field, such as the Bibles and Homer epic. Indeed, agreement contributes much in enriching and modifies human knowledge.

To sum up, in my view, the speaker’s assertion goes too extreme. I concede that we gain much from people disagree. Otherwise, people whose ideas we share in common also contribute to our knowledge accumulation, by give us confidence, enthusiasm and more profound and perfect knowledge
