Title: Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial.
position:研究要仔细和负责的去引导
1.研究成果给人类的正面影响
2.研究成果给人类的负面影响
3.缺乏正确的到向,研究就可能带来负面的甚至是灾害性的影响.
I agree with the speaker's broad assertion that money spent on research sometimes is a good investment. However, no one could ensure that money spent on any research will necessarily become a good investment instead of disaster. In fact, the purpose and process of research, in itself, determine which kind of results research will finally bring about, helpful or harmful. For this matter, I hold that correct guide which takes not only present conditions but also long-term condition into consideration is indispensable during research.
I concede that the speaker is on the correct philosophical side of this issue. In retrospect, human beings have greatly benefited from technological innovation due to success of research. A good case in point, as medical science progressed toward greater understanding of the nature of disease and its prevention, new public-health and maternal-care practices make people live much longer than ever before and high quality lives. Besides, current researches of stem cell have shown a promise that these cells could be used to treat illnesses such as Parkinson's and heart disease which are impossible to cure with contemporary medical technology.
Yet, it should be noted that the effects of research are not always positive. The phrase research dualism is used to refer to the fact that researches often have both positive and negative effects. While we enjoy the benefit of technological innovation, it may dangerous for us to ignore the negative and let alone disastrous effects bought by new researches. Taking human cloning for example, it is unbearable to imagine that scientists destroy potentially thousands of embryos, which have been beautiful baby boys or girls, to try to successfully clone one individual, who will grow up with no happiness, with abnormalities, with being shunned or ostracized from society because they are clones. In addition, human cloning will lead to serious disturbance of morality and ethic, and eventually threaten stability of society in future.
Therefore, the dualism of research determines that research should be carefully and responsibly guided. With the rapid development of technology, we human beings possess greater power to improve living condition as well as to bring about unprecedented and even fatal damage to environment, in social behaviors, especially in the process of research. Thus any carelessness or lack of responsibility will result in negative effect and even disaster, just as the matter of human cloning mentioned above. Another remarkable example is the so-called Star War defense in the 1980s, which was ill-conceived and eventually bring bad influence on the development of economy and society.
In final analysis, a myriad of cases more than one time illustrate that results of research can be both blessing and curse. Thus, without being properly guided, money spent on research does not automatically become a good investment. Only over emphasis is placed on both responsibility and adherence to strict safety practices in the process of research, can we human beings benefit from the development of science. |
