17 :In most societies, competition generally has more of a negative than a positive effect.

The speaker makes a claim that competition has more of a negative than a positive effect in most societies. While his opinion is some times reasonable, I don't quite accept his idea. Competition is important to a society, and it is hard to say that competition is ultimately beneficial or detrimental to society.

Competitions which are under the proper instruction will benefit the society. In the feudal society, many people who are at the bottom of the social hierarchy have less chance than the nobles. They have less chance to enter good schools, to discuss his ideas and to go on his research. Their improvements to the society are obviously being limited for the reason of lacking competition.  Without competition, the society could not know who is best fit for his position or who should be best supported by what he is doing. Suited competition can also improve the efficiency of the work. There is a example which strongly support the statement. Nowadays, in most of the factory, managers will give an award to the worker who does the best in some aspects such as hard working. This kind of system could easily upgrade the enthusiasm of other worker because they also like being proved. These kinds of competitions do well for the factory and are also positive to the society if being seen at a higher level.

On the contrast, unlimited competition will make the society filled with some serious conflict. Take economy for example, unlimited competitions will cause the redundant of goods, pollution of the environment and a waste of the resource such as oil and water. At this time, we need government to accommodate the production and the consuming. Unlimited competition will break the balance of the society, cause the competitors paying more attention on the competition itself and less on how to improve competitors' ability and capability. As we have seen, we needs a method to control the competition in order that we can make good use of it.

In sum, we could not affirm whether competition is good or bad. If we can make good use of it, competition can bring vigor and flourish to our society. On the other side, if the competition is out of control, it will also do harm to the society. Competition is a two-side sword.

第二篇:
241:"There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

Although I appreciate that every individual in a society should disobey and resist unfair law, I can not completely agree with the title statement. In my opinion, obey just law is as important as disobey unjust law.

Everyone in the society has the obligation to obey just law. While individuals are at times willing to be free and disengaged , the society needs regular and order. History tells us that fair law is essential to a stable and well-being society. Just law helps a society to control the behavior of people, tells them what can be done or not. Simply put, it create a atmosphere that everybody could have the most freedom of living.

If we do not obey the law, especially just law, the society will no longer be steady. Here is a strong example that supports my reason. Imagine that in a society which does not have any law or moral standard, one inside it can do anything he want without been restricted. He can kill other people, hold anything he likes without paying or ignore the traffic light while driving on the road. It appears that he is free completely, but he can not acquire welfare. He might be murdered by some other people or easily have an accident because other people could also disobey the law. Obviously, disobey just law does harm to the society and people live in it. Every individual in the society should has the responsibility to obey just laws.

On the other hand, if the law is not just, we also have the responsibility to disobey and resist it. We are not the machine of obedience. President Jefferson had said: "In a free country there will always be conflicting ideas, and this is a source of strength." When we find something is wrong to the society, such as unjust law, we also have the incumbency to challenge it.

In conclusion, I think that we should balance the importance of obeying just laws and resisting unjust ones.
