Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served.

In recent years, either modernization for its own sake or preservation of old building has been at the center of numerous controversies, especially in the areas with glorious past or in the developing countries. Different groups hold different expectations. Some feel the old buildings should be razed to create practical facilities that serve current utilitarian purposes. However, I concede that sometimes modern development indeed takes advantages over the preservation of historic buildings; old buildings have its own values in many aspects.

First of all, an old building may be worth saving because it uniquely represents some bygone era. From caves of prehistoric life to modern skyscrapers, we can get visible information of the development of the history about culture, politics, and tradition and so on--buildings are the vehicles of civilization. This lies in the famous historic building--pyramid in Egypt, which has present the modern researchers plenty of codes to decipher the history of ancient of Egypt. Without the pyramid, we could not have known so much about the great history. Another example is the Forbidden City of China, the ceilings, furnishings and paintings inside which shows the life of noble in ancient china. Thus, it is the historic buildings that represent a valuable record of past.

Secondly, old buildings can offer artistic values not to the one country but to the entire world. For instance, when people come to china, Summer Palace will be their Mecca not only because it is the place where the empire once lived but because it is with anesthetic values and grant visitors an artistic journey as well. Besides, the architecture built in Italy in the renaissance years are also masterpieces which enrich people's minds.

Thirdly, old buildings also have economic value--they play an essential role in the tourism because when people travel to a new place, they will partly go for the places of interests, most of which are historic buildings. Imagine that if the Colossem is taken place by a five-star hotel, I suppose seldom people would be interested in Rome any longer.

Moreover, apart from diverse values of old building mentioned above, let us think about what “the contemporary needs" are, which seems difficult to answer. People’s requirement always keep pace with the development, that means, what seems quite necessary today may become not necessary tomorrow, because people's desire will not meet the end. Almost all residents will be glad if they are provided with wider roads, bigger garden and more living and working space. All of these would lead insensible decisions. a typical case is the issue of planting tree. In the past, in order to assart more farmland, human beings cut down numerous trees. However, when realizing the significance of the trees, people plant them again. During the time, humans lost a lot. man have been taught so many lessons by their lack of wisdom, so what will we do when comes to the old buildings? we should know that once the old building is razed ,it will never been restored, just as someone said "historic buildings are stone record"---leaving only endless regret later.

However, the preservation of old buildings is not indiscriminate and we should take responsibility to discern the historic building to the merely old ones. The latter ones refer to the aged building which have neither historic values nor practical values and thus give way to the contemporary needs .yet when evaluating a building, government and planners should turn to professionals. Once certificated as academic historic and artistic the architecture should be handed down to the next generation.

To sum up ,the historic buildings are not the heirloom of people in that city but the treasure of all human beings as well. As for some valuable buildings, we should preserve, but as for the useless old ones, contemporary need is superior.
