To study for the prospective profession careers or for the individual preference every now and then confuses many people. And some educators are also haunted all the while by how to require students to make a choice between them. In fact, since the mere emphasis on direct job-related programs is inadequate and sometimes shortsighted, a proper combination would be a better solution.

To begin with, interest is the best teacher and the essential impetus to personal success in one’s profession. It arouses one’s enthusiasm and potential so that one could be absorbed in a certain field and exert his/her abilities to the utmost degree. No matter what handicap he/she might meet, the passion and inspiration sparked by personal interest would lead the person to final success. Edison is a good case in point. With great love to inventions, he worked hard for over ten hours everyday, eating and sleeping in the lab day and night, but he did not feel bitter or boring at all. In fact, he enjoyed doing experiment and making findings. From this example, we are aware why after thousands of failures, he still invented electric light bulbs. Similar cases are Bill Gates and Darwin, the obsession to Internet and the love to nature respectively produce a prodigy of software and an outstanding biologist. Therefore, students should be encouraged to pursue knowledge in their favorite fields and learn for their interests.

Besides, the primary purpose of education is to develop the personality of the individuals and transmit the sound values and knowledge to the students rather than prepare them for future professional careers only. For one thing, only training job-skill is insufficient to handle whatever future work may present. Programs that promise entry into the job market may provide no more than some relevant expertise or techniques to cope with interviews, which compared with the real abilities like critical thinking, analysis and deduction, and original problem-solving alike, seem uncreative and somewhat vulgar. For another thing, work does not mean everything and should not account for the whole life. Life is so colorful and complicated that it consists of various relations and emotions among people, like affection between relatives, friends and lovers, and the diverse obligations including personal and social responsibilities. In addition, all kinds of enjoyments, such as wandering about in the nature to view the splendid scenery or making holiday to admire the famous resorts or historic sites, are also a necessity of life. But the program with focus on nothing but the artifice to find a job cannot teach us how to savor and appreciate these feelings and experiences.

Admittedly, everyone needs some basic job-related skills to make a living, so professional training is an indispensable aspect of education. Without enough expertise and abilities to entering the job market, one could not bring home the bacon, not to mention assuming other obligations or enjoying the life. The tragedy of Van Gogh tolls the alarm bell for us that people involved in nothing but personal interests could not survive in the realistic even cruel society. Furthermore, excessively diverse interests would cause a waste of people's energy and time, because the life span and people's vigor are so limited that we have to concentrate on a narrow range of subjects and be more practical. In this way, we should find a balance between the pursuit of personal interests and catering to the needs to survive.

To sum up, although the pragmatic necessities in the true life require us to pay more attention to acquiring adequate job-related skills, the students should be granted the rights to go in for the subjects that interest them for the sake of their long-term development. And a concordant marriage between the practical consideration and pursuit of personal love may be more helpful.
