Issue41"Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
In this issue, the role of nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits in society is discussed. The author assumes that nonmainstream science takes the main place in society. However, in my opinion, although these inquiries satisfies certain human needs in phsychology 【psychology?psychological?】world of human beings which are not addressed by mainstream science, the conflicts it causes overweight the only advantage.
Admittedly, people easily turn to these nonmainstream areas of inquiry for solution, which could not provide by rigid and cold science. In modern society, science has developed so well that it can explain amount of natural phenomenon logically and reasonably. Unfortunately, it could not tell human beings their separate【?respective?】 future by induction and deduction. Faced with this uncertainty and doubt, people resort to astrology and fortune-telling for guidance and expect these inquiries would help them to make the best decision. Another reason why nonmainstream science is favored by a few people is that it soothes the poor and oppressed. When they are frustrated by the reality for a long time and are unable to struggle themselves from oppression, people are likely to lose the reliance on the rational analysis and wish a gray of hope from "authority". This need is well satisfied by psychic and paranormal pursuits.
While these inquiries may help people feel better about destiny and circumstances, I doubt whether the effects are always positive. First of all, people depending on fortune teller will risk the danger of being lazy. If some one promised them a splendid future, they might sit at home waiting the success to fall down rather then work hard. Or they might feel unwilling to slog day in and day out since the future is told to be pale. 或者说,只是用fortune telling来寻求一种安慰呢?】Moreover, too much depending on 【这里比上一个对了too much,是否上一个也该是too much的,过度依赖才对呢?】fortune teller and other nonmainstream areas of inquiry make people illogical. For example, many a time, a husband tries to divorce with his wife for the only reason that fortune teller inform him that the bad luck is from his wife. It may seem ridiculous to others but seem understandable to the husband because he has stopped making decision with critical thinking and common sense. Suborn adherence to irrational belief based on emprical facts lead to intolerance.
最好在上一段有明确的说明,这样结构更清晰】nonmainstream pursuits have often led all to atrocities. A case in point is an accident caused by a female fortune teller 5 years ago in a small village in China. She claimed that she had the water from the heaven which can prevent illness and help people make money. Some believer gave her a mount of money for the water to drink. The water is green. It makes people believe the water is special. A fewer days later, people who drank the water all found something wrong with stomach. The government involved in this event and the green water is finally testified as the polluted water from a dead river. Although this kind of accident seldom happened on educated people, it well demonstrates the role of nonmainstream areas of inquiry and psychic and paranormal pursuits. They could not play a vital role in modern society considered the potential harm to populace and society.
To sum up, I concede the pursuits listed above find their place in people’s psychological world in so far as they afford people solace and so-called certainty. However, they could not play a vital role in modern society where science is well developed, because people depending on nonmainstream pursuits will risk the danger of being lazy and illogical. The relationship of each other and then society will be destroyed by pseudo “scientists” and their irrational believers.
Humans have long been interested in predicting the future. It is impossible to know when groups of people became aware that what happens in the future is likely to differ from what is happening at the present moment, but realize this they did. Over the years, societies have developed various ways to try to divine the future. Some groups attempted to acquire insight into events through magic or contact with the supernatural. To do this, they might have read portents in the entrails of animals or in tea leaves. In ancient Rome, generals used these methods to calculate their likely success in upcoming battles. Reliance on patterns of stars as a means of predicting personal futures also developed early on. Astrology, the study of how events on earth correspond to the positions and movements of astronomical bodies, was a key science in classical China, Greece, and Rome, and in the Islamic Middle East. Although astrology and astronomy went their separate ways during the 1500s, as late as the 17th century many Europeans consulted astrologers to calculate the fate of an imminent wedding or a sign of illness. For many years, scientists have rejected the principles of astrology. Even so, millions of people continue to believe in or practice it. |
