130. "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
MW:socialize: to make social, especially: to fit or train for a social environment.
It is undoubted that, one without any socialization is very difficult or even impossible to live in the society and follow its culture very well. However, it is not only over-statement that how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society, but also over stressing the function of socialization could impede the advance and innovation of society. But fortunately, we have realized that how to raise children who can help bring about a better society, which is contrary with the assertion.
To begin with, admittedly, socialization for children is necessary and also we have been following it throughout the recorded history. One needs to look no further than the contrary of the statement that socialization is essential. Human infants are born without any culture and social skills. If without any socialization, the infant is always an infant except for his age. He don't know the language of his society; he cannot communicate with others; he has no idea of his social culture; he cannot live well in the society. It is only a man is socialized by his parents, teachers and others more or less into social and cultural animals that can he live and thrive in the society. Indeed, we are fulfilling this duty with our informal or formal education. For instance, from children (say girls) born on, they would learn how to be daughters, sisters, friends, wives, and mothers from their parents, their teachers and the society. They would also learn about the culture, the useful skills, the essential virtues for the society, say a democratic society, which includes responsibility, tolerance, respect and so on, from school or family.
However, the destiny of society doesn't fully depend on the socialization of children since full socialization of every person would even result that no one innovate the society through some creative theories and minds, which are the very key of society advance. We would believe this when we simply refer to the history. If Copernicus was socialized into social culture and value of his times, there would be no heliocentric system, which was regarded as heresy in his times; if Galileo was socialized into social culture of his times, namely Aristotelianism, there would be no that great well-known experiment, dropping two objects of different weight simultaneously from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and perhaps we are believing that the speed of fall is proportional to the weight; if Bruno was socialized fully, there would no that Bruno who are known for his braveness and adherence to truth. If all girls were socialized into the value that women were inferior to men in middle ages, there would no feminists and the recent value that men and women are equal. Likewise, we look at the opposite side example. In the 1930s German, it was socialization, which is also Nazification, that leaded to the World War Two. Shortly, there would no questioning and criticizing, which is the very engine of society advance, if the children are socialized fully.
But fortunately, we have realized that the significance of questioning, criticizing, innovation, creativity for a better society and raised children following it recently. All the parents encourage their children to ask "why" as soon as get any information. From the preliminary education, to the college education, every student is taught to question the solutions to exercises, their teachers and even their textbooks. In the school, the scores are not valued as something essential any more, and the creativity and innovation are worshiped.
All in all, socialization is necessary for living in the society but not the first-rate important factor of the destiny of society. We have been struggling for the way in which we raise children who can help bring about a better society. Furthermore, the destiny of society is such a complicated issue, which is worthy of all human beings' devotion of intelligence and energy. |
