Issue 4
No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study.
1. 内行受到过专门训练,尤其是现在这个分工更加明确的时代。
2. 知识是有连续性的
3. 当然外行有的时候也会带了重大变化
Whether significant advance in certain field depends on the insiders, say experts and professionals or outsiders who inject the knowledge and experience from another field to the former one, as the speaker asserts has been always a controversial issue. In my opinion, although there are occasions where some historic breakthrough maybe attributed to layers, it’s insiders indeed who play a decisive role in the progress of every field.
To begin with in the era of rapid social and technological development leading to increasingly life complexity, work division is becoming more and more specific. That’s to say, without some proper training, a crewman even can’t drive a car, not to mention making it more environment-friendly, though both the car and the ship are made of mental. To become a good doctor involves in years of study and numerous practice, to be a successful lawyer needs to memorize abundance of laws and regulations, to be a excellent economist one must familiar with every major economist in the history from Simi in 1700s, grasp their pith and first of all be good at math. All of those are not an overnight job. And without necessary basis, there’s no way to deepen one’s research in a very areas.
What’s more, just as Newton said (and I paraphrase):”If I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” In almost every field, there is a context. Forerunners have laid foundations for us, and then the specialist in their times use it and generate new methods which in turn facilitate other specialist to make use of. Imaging a talented layer tries hundreds of ways and takes several years to prove a mathematical formula only to find that it has been achieved by a mathematician 100 yeas ago. In fact what the layers lack is not anything but systematical knowledge. In other word, he or she doesn’t climb to the shoulders of the giants. As far as I am concern there’s a danger for every outsider that is pursuing of another walks of life doing something that are totally wasteful, which not only can’t help to stimulate the progress in a strange fields, but also do great harm to themselves.
Admittedly, there’s no denying that outsiders can bring some major changes in certain field. And as many subjects interlace with each other, it will provide a broader perspective and therefore accelerate the improvement of related areas. But that’s not the mainstream, which just gives us a happily surprise instead of sustainable accomplishment.
Above all, from what has been discussed above, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that outsiders who maybe full of passion and energy can hardly take over the task to endow human beings influential changes. What we rely on is the industrious work of the specialists in each field who have solid basis and without doubt, stand on the shoulders of giants.
