41"Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."

In ancient times, when mainstream science such as physics, chemistry and maths were hardly developed, people depended largely on astrology, fortune-telling, and paranormal pursuits to explain the world and predict the future.  However, since the revolution of science and technology broke out in 19th century and a great advance of psychology took place, little by little, the role played by those nonmainstreams ways to inquiry paled against more reasonable and logic explanations provided by science and psychology.

It is true that past people put great emphasis on astrology, fortune-telling, and paranormal pursuits in order to explain the world and predict the future. In human nature people have psychological demand to be assured by knowing what would happened to them. Meanwhile at that time science was hardly developed. Both the psychological need and lack of scientific knowledge resulted in past people's deep trust in such mysterious ways. In eastern coutries, some groups such as necromancers were believed to have the ability to discover people's hidden ideas, to talk with ghost and to release souls from purgatory. These necromancers were widely respected because people were afraid to fall into hell after death, they believed that the necromancers could lead them to Elysium. In western countries, Indians and witches were believed to have the supernatural power to tell fortunes of a person's past, present and future. To do this, they read portents by watching a crystal ball or tea leaves in a glass, and this mysterious method usually eliminated all the  suspicion people may had before, if there were any. Compared to these two inquiry ways, the astrology seemed more convincing, which was not absolutely groundless and might had some common place with the later developed astronomy. In classical China, Greece, and Rome, the astrologers, ususally engaged in royal courts, predicted what would happen on earth by observing the aspects, positions and movements of stars. The emperors always relied on them to make crucial decisions such as military strategies or when was the appropriate time to hold a ceremony. The similar things existed in western world, until late in 17th century, many Europeans consulted astrologers to calculate the fate of an imminent wedding or a sign of illness. To sum up, with no consideration of their correctness, people in ancient time were used to turn to the fortune-tellers and astrologers for help once they feared of life or nature.

However, with the help of increasingly developed science and technology as well as the comprehensive psychology, people are much more certain about ourselves and the world, with many natural phenomenons explained, and as a result people paid less attention to those predictors who seem to be less trustworthy. For example, Sigmund Freud's theory about subconsciousness explained why people dreamed such dreams and revealed that sometimes people's behavior were subconsciously influenced by their inside impulses and desires. Since then people did not depend on fortune-tellers to tell them what their dreams indicated and what would happen as a result. Also since we have made great progress in astronomy, astronomers are able to give more well-grouded explanation to many astronomic phenomenons rather then the astrologers could. That is to say, with scientific methods and theories, today's scientists can make much more explict and accurate predictions than ever before. Admittedly, there are still many people believe in astrology or fortune-telling or something alike, because they need to find a reliance which can never be doubted and questioned and rely on it to gain assurance and confidence for life. But after all, these people are fewer and usually they depend on science much more even they are not aware of this, as today's world is a world of truth and knowledge.

In conclusion, the nonmainstream inquiry ways did play an crucial role in past, and becaus of people's psychological need they are still part of today's world. However, their functions paled gradually as the accelerated pace of science and psychology develpment.

In ancient times, when删掉when mainstream science such as physics, chemistry and mathematics were hardly developeddeveloped slowly, sometimes unavailable, so people depended largely onhad to turn to astrology, fortune-telling, and paranormal pursuits to explain the world and predict the future. However, since the revolution of science and technology broke out in 19th century and a great advance of psychology took place, with the breakthrough of science and technology of 19th century little by little, 删掉little by little the role played by those nonmainstreams ways to inquiry paled against more reasonable and logic explanations provided by science and psychology.

It is true that past people put great emphasis on astrology, fortune-telling, and paranormal pursuits in order to explain the world and predict the future. In human nature people have psychological demand to be assured by knowingpsychological tendency to knowing比较合适 what would happenedwould happen to them. Meanwhile at that time与此同时,就不要at that time,这句话改成unfortunately, science help little because of its limitation science had achieved little. thusBoth the psychological need and lack of scientific knowledge resulted in past people's deep trust inso obsessed with such mysterious我认为是迷信的东西,不改也可以,老外倒认为是奇迹般的现象 ways. In eastern countries, some groups such as necromancers were believed to have the ability to discover people's hidden ideas, to talk with ghost and to release souls from purgatory你说的我也开始相信了,呵呵. These necromancers were widely respected because people were afraid to fall into hell after death. They believed that the necromancers could lead them to Elysium. go to hell是见鬼,去死;fall into hell落入地狱? In western countries, witches were believed这样的词要学会变换,一篇中出现太多了 to have the supernatural power to tell fortunes of a person's past, present and future. Compared to these two inquiry ways, the astrology seemed more convincing, which was not absolutely groundless and might had some common place with the later developed astronomy. In old China, the astrologers predicted what would happen on earth by observing the aspects, positions and movements of stars. The emperors always relied on them to make crucial decisions such as military strategies or when was the appropriate time to hold a ceremony. The similar things existed in western world, until late in 17th century, many Europeans consulted astrologers to calculate the fate of an imminent wedding or a sign of illness. To sum up, with no consideration of their correctness, people in ancient times used to turn to the fortune-tellers and astrologers for help once they feared of life or nature.

However, with the help of well-developedunder further development of science and psychologytechnology,我想psychology是人文科学,应该也是science的一类,要是并列也是science, typical of psychology,来写, people are much more certain这个肯定不好,记得有个歌词,“只要你一个眼神肯定,我的爱就有意义”,他应该不是certain about the world. Since science could explain many puzzles, people paid less attention to those predictors who seem to be less trustworthy. For example, Froyide's theory of subconsciousness explained why people dreamed such dreams and revealed that sometimes people's behavior were subconsciously influenced by their inside impulses and desires.
Since thenpeople did not depend on fortune-tellers to tell them what their dreams indicated and what would happen as a result.
Also since we have made great progress in astronomy, astronomers are able to give more well-founded explanation to many astronomic phenomenons rather then than,不知道你的ranther then是否打错,前面有more,后面怎么用呢?the astrologers could. That is to say, with scientific methods and theories, today's scientists can make much more explicit and accurate predictions than ever before.
Those detractors of this opinion may point out that many people still believe in astrology or fortune-telling or something alike, because their need to find a reliance which can never be doubted and rely on it to gain confidence for life cannot be provided by science.
But after all, these people are fewer and usually they depend on science much more even they are not aware of this, as today's world is a world of truth and knowledge.

In conclusion, the nonmainstream inquiry ways did play ana crucial role inthe past, and because of people's psychological need they are still part of today's world. However, their functions paled gradually as the accelerated pace of science and psychology development.
