题目:
“The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records.”
正文:
While video camera is more and more used throughout the world to record our daily life, it is merely one of the documentation instruments we can choose, playing a complementary role to written records. Thus, the above-mentioned contention overstates the comparative significance of video camera as a documentary tool.
Video camera is widely used for its function to record precisely and conveniently. For the purpose of documenting temporal, spatial events, I agree that a video record is usually more accurate and more convincing than a written record. Consequently, those important incidents departed could be captured to be the objective historical datas and then replayed in truth when needed. Besides, video records can play an evidentiary role in legal proceedings, such as those involving robbery, traffic accident, motor vehicle violations and even malpractice in a hospital operating room.
The growing significance of the video camera is not only presented in those circumstance mentioned before. In recent days, more and more young bloods are wild about digital video which is new generation of the traditional video camera. As to them, DV is indispensable especially in an interesting tour and a surprise party on the weekend. Indeed, a diary entry cannot present such a wonderful memory just like “yesterday once more” from the general sense consist of vision and hearing. But, a DV can.
Nonetheless, for certain other purposes but not merely record the moving three-dimensional images, written records are advantageous to and more appropriate than video records. For example, most of the legal matters are best put to the written documentation: video is of no practical use in documenting the terms of a simple contractual agreement of flat-renting between lodger and landlord, say nothing of much more complex ones of incorporation or the establishment of a trust. And video is of little use when it comes to documenting a person’s subjective state of mind, impressions, or reflections of an event or experience. Indeed, to the extent that personal interpretation adds dimension, depth and richness to the record, written documentation is actually more important than video, for the time being, and in the future as well.
The last thing I want to take a glance at this issue is that a video record is of no use in documenting statistical of other quantitative information. On the assumption that written record including keyboard is not in existence, we can only know from what we see in any downtown area of China that the population of Chinese is quiet enormous. However, we can not obtain the total amount of more than 1.3 billion, yet the fact that sexual balance has incline to male.
To sum up, although video records are inherently more objective, accurate, and complete, it presents only one dimension of our life and times; by contrary, written documentation will always be needed to quantify, demystify, and provide meaning to the world around us. |
