------正文------
I strongly agree that rituals and ceremonies are important composition of a culture, without which, societies and groups of people may be at a loss in who they are. Moreover, with the irreversible trend of globalization, nations should pay attention to preserve their traditional cultures to prevent its fade.
On one hand, while cultures consist of many parts, rituals and ceremonies are indispensable ones of them. Rituals and ceremonies are the revelation of our traditional good merits and core of our ancestors’ value systems. For example, in rural areas in China, some peoples still keep the traditional custom of inviting forebears to enjoy the festivals, which may be considered ridiculous by the western. However, it shows the traditional merit of reverence to the old and our ancestors for their diligent work that the later generations benefit greatly from. Some rituals also indicate the value systems of our ancestors: many Americans have the habit of going to church on Sunday. The ceremony is passed down from generation to generation, revealing the religious belief and social value of the early settlers , that is, believing in the Jesus and regarding honesty, goodness, benevolence as the good moral of an individual.
On the other hand, if nations overlook their rituals and ceremonies and discard them, societies and groups of people may lose their social identity. They do not know who they are, where they evolve from. Moreover, they have no reverence to their nations and no commitment to national loyalty, as a consequence, leading to the elimination of patriotism. Many political problems are indirectly caused by the loss of social identity. For instance, the Nazis distort their social value by identifying Germans are superior to other peoples in the world and bring a great disaster to human beings. Another case in point, the Moslem countries are all small countries with limited military forces, but they are always involved in the endless wars because of abundant petroleum resources in their continent. How can they survive and protect the sovereign of the country? It is their tenacious belief that God will protect them whatever difficulties they meet with. They strengthen this belief by holding rituals and ceremonies regularly in a year, to inspire themselves and their descendents, reminding them the national loyalty they are obliged to commit to. In this method, they survive and still have autonomy.
Moreover, with the irreversible trend of globalization, nations should look up to preserve their rituals and ceremonies from ruining. The complex connection of economy between the nationals threatens the independence of their cultures. Many traditional cultures are faced with the danger of disappearance. The United States is typical in this culture trend. The nation is composed of heterogenetic residents due to large numbers of immigrates during the past century, the cultures who brought crash with traditional cultures passed down from the early settlers. As can be seen in religious belief, more and more residents no longer believe in Christianity and shift to Buddha or Rome Catholicism. Less and less ceremonies and rituals are held every year because people have no time to spare from business and industry to culture. This can be a dangerous signal for the nation and the government should take steps to preserve these cultures. Firstly, they can subsidize the rural areas, where the traditional cultures are not severely affected by globalization. Secondly, the government can instruct the importance of traditional culture among students, who represent the future of the United States. In doing so, the nation can preserve, at least part of its rituals and ceremonies and may not end up in mental poverty.
In sum, cultures are composed of several parts, among which rituals and ceremonies account for indispensable parts and these two parts help strengthen patriotism and national loyalty of their people, and therefore should be preserved if their existence are threatened. |
