修改完毕,大家再给看看吧。
The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.

(1)自然科学领域的例子。达尔文Darwin的进化论,
(2)而政治领域的例子。日本发动侵略战争,当时国内都很赞成,但是现在开来不是这么回事吧。
Whether individuals are great or not includes many factors, however I think the most important factor that evaluate the greatness is the contribution to the whole society. The issue that the greatness of individuals can be decided by those who live after them or by their contemporaries are rising. Through reflection once more, I prefer the former as following.
In natural field, many theories are so profound or violated from the popular views of the period that it is difficult for their contemporaries to decide the greatness of individuals. If society regards individuals as greatness, he or she should have done some contributions to the society, and these contributions have generated huge impacts on our life or our ideas. For example, the theory of evolution, finished by Darwin, is about the evolution of human being. When published, it was impossible for most people to receive the fact that human being come from monkey. Darwin was received many misunderstandings. However, with development of research, the theory of evolution has become more popular and many people think it is reasonable for evolution of human being. The example tells us that true idea need many years even several generations to be accepted by society. Then there are listed examples like that, such as Copernicus, who insisted that sun is the center of the universe not Earth. The main reasons of these examples are attributed to the lack ability of their contemporaries in understanding the world. In fact, in natural field these situations are very common, mostly because these new ideas conflict with the standard of society in that period. As a result their contemporaries cannot understand the new ideas. Whereas when those who live after them experience studying many related subjects and receiving new ideas, they have the ability to judge whether the greatness of individuals or not.
On the other hand, in political field it is not proper to decide the greatness of individuals because of the limitation in recognition. Take the Second world war as an example, during that horrible years, many Japanese thought their nation was the best excellent in the world and it was obvious that they should own rich resource of world. Unfortunately, they took for granted that the emperor of Japan was the great man. However, it is the blind loyalty to emperor that gives people of Asian huge sorrows. Nowadays, it is well known that Japan made a mistake to break out the wrong war and nobody considers that the emperor of Japan is great. The main reason that cause war happened is that Japanese could not realize that all of people have the same right to live, and there are no difference among people in different regions. However, government of Japan made use of this point and exaggerated the excellence of Japanese and loyalty to emperor of Japan. Consequently, it is wrong to decide the greatness of individuals by their contemporaries. If do so, the emperor of Japan is a great man, which is an obvious mistake.
From above discussion, because of the recognition limitation of their contemporaries, we can easily conclude that the greatness of individuals can be decided by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries in both natural field and political field. |
