So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present.

Does the past provide guidance for living in the new and complex today？Although I concede that there are marked differences between the past and the present, in my point of view the history is the mirror of the present and the study of the past can help us to cope with the challenge we face in the present.

First of all, on a personal level, the study of the past is the foundation of further academic research. As Newton once said, "If I have seen further, it is by standing in the shoulders of giants", in which the giant in science attributed his grand achievements partly to the work of his precedents. In fact, Kepler's laws of planetary motion and Galileo's discovery about the falling body gave inspiration for Newton to develop his famous three laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation. Even the greatest physicist of all time had to learn from the past, it is entirely necessary for ordinary people to look back to the academic accomplishments in history in order to solve the current problems.

Secondly, failures and mistakes in the history are beneficial to the contemporary society. As an old saying goes, failure is the source of the success. On the other words, it is through making mistakes that people get closer to success. But the history provide a short cut without the failure of ours; Some events happened in the past should be useful lessons to teach us that some measure to deal with the problem is doomed to fail. The planned economy policy Chinese took in 1950s, for example, did not proved to be successful. Instead, it resulted in the lasting poverty and economic stagnation. In the 1980s, the architect Deng Xiaoping learned from the fatal failure of the history and put the market economy in to practice. Because of this economic reform, China has been making strides in economics. In short, the experiences from the history not only put the individual a better place to live, but also direct the society to a correct path.  

Admittedly, the absolutely new situation the drastic technology advances bring about in the last decade challenge the world. History does not directly tell us what strategy should we take since cannot there is no similar cases in human history for us to refer to. Consider the technology of cloning, which was invented for the purpose of increase the food supplied by the plants and animals. Nevertheless, when it comes to human cloning, people become controversial on this issue. Some people argue that the cloning human made by special genes would create many talents who would serve to our society, while others point out that the ethics and moral problem, such as the identity of the cloning man, would destroy our social system. Looking back in our history, there is not direct guidance explicitly telling us how to deal with the issue. However, the past, or the knowledge and the ethnics from the past are the only thing we can rely on. After all, we cannot create ideas without foundation.

In the last analysis, I contend that for most circumstances we face today, history provides enough knowledge for an individual and a society to thrive, while in some cases it is the abilities we gain from the past rather that the past itself that guide us to make the decisions to cope with the new problem.
