The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.
'A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin.'

In this argument the author attempts to convince that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin. To substantiate the claim, the author provides the evidence that a study of a group of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream show that the participants reported the marked improvement of their skin after using the Luxess with mild soap. As it stands the argument is unconvincing for several critical flaws.

The first problem with the argument involves the statistcal reliable of the survey. The author provides no evidence that the number of the respondents is statistically significant or the respondents are representative of the entire consumer in the general. It is likely that the group of volunteers are only a very small percentage of the consumers of the Luxess, they can not represent the overall consumers. Lacking information about the randomness of sampling or the size of the survey's sample, the author can not make a convincing argument just based on the study.

In the second place, the study cited by the author is too vague to informative. The author does not indicate that the report of the participant of the study is reliable. It is possible that the participants realized the improvement of their facial skin in the way their skin looked and felt, but it is not the fact, only their subjective feeling. No medical test or other scientific test indicates the improvement of quality of the facial skin. Even perhaps some volunteers told lies because it may be that they want to get the monetary reward from the Luxess Company. Therefore, until the questions are answered it is impossible to assess the validity and reliability of the study. As it stands, the result is worthless as evidence for conclusion.

Last but not least, the author unfairly assumes that Luxess accounts for the improvement of the volunteers' skin. However, the author provides no evidence to support that is case, nor does the author establish a casual relationship between the improvement of the skin and the effect of Luxess. It is highly possible that other factors might contribute to the improvement of skin. For instance, it is likely that using mild soap can improve the quality of skin. Moreover, it is possible that during the time of this study the volunteers emphasized much more on the protection of their facial skin. They did not do some action which is not salubrious for their skin, such as drinking, smoking and eat the peppery or greasy food. Therefore the argument is unconvincing because the author provides no evidence to rule out such interpretations.   

In conclusion, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. To bolster the author would have not provide the evidence that (1) the study can represent the effect of all the consumer of Luxess (2) the result of the study is veritable, namely the volunteers'  quality of skin acutely is improved  (3) it is the using Luxesss that responsible for the improvement of skin.
