2、"Competition is ultimately more beneficial than detrimental to society."

Whether competition is more beneficial than detrimental to society ultimately? Different people have different answers due to their respective point of view. In my point of view, I strongly agree with the statement that，generally speaking, competition has more of a positive effect in most societies, meanwhile the negative effect should not be ignored.

First of all, competition is a law of nature that exists not only in nature, but also in human society in all ages. In the ancient days, human ancestors compete with beast for food, and then competition among different races for demesne occurred. Now days, people compete for thriving rather than survival. Competition has always been natural character of human, which is accompanied with the progress of evolution and development.

In the progress of competition, people realize the differences between each others. For certain, the laggards correct their disadvantages to catch up with the steps of opponent; while the outrunners strengthen their advantages to keep their position. As a result, competition accelerates the development of the society; human potential is detected and developed. Innovation, invention, new technique and product owe to the effect of competition, which impacts the society in many areas, such as in education, industry, economic, commerce, president election and Olympic Games. In a word, competition has become the power of society.

However, if it were not for competition, the development of society will be very slow, even reversional. First, people will be so lazy that satisfied with present status considering little advance, due to lack of spiritual motivity. Secondly, monopoly would come forth without competition that service and quality would decline. People have no choice but to accept the reality, even though it could not satisfy people. So without competition, the progress of development of the society, technology, and science, invariably is inhibited.

Admittedly, the negative aspect accompanied with competition should not be overlooked. On one hand, competition rise enmity between people, calumniate, abuse, etc are often adopted by opponent to strike people's confidence and honor. On the other hand, illegal artifice of competition come into being, such as stealing trade secret, under table dealing, dishonesty, bribe, which threaten the social security and boom. However, these are not the fault of competition itself, rather than the extreme artifice in order not to eliminate through selection or contest. Even there were no competition, these kinds of illegal means still exist, which could be inhibited and punished by legal means.

In sum, competition has played a positive part in society, and it is more beneficial than detrimental to society, meanwhile, laws should be adopted to protect to legal competition. In addition, co-operation should not be ignored.
