Nowadays, more and more emphasis is placed on the issue over how to make education truly effective thus to benefit the people and society. Some people argue that education should be specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of the students. I doubt such education will be truly effective and I think some other needs and interests, no less important than individual ones should be taken into consideration, which effective education ought to meet.
As a student myself, I cannot wait to welcome education specifically designed corresponding to my own needs and interests. I always long that I can learn whatever appeal to me, from philosophy, arts to science and business. Curiosity is the best teacher. With the opportunity provided by education, students can dig into what they concern, they can read classical works, they can discuss with teachers and experts of the area, they can do surveys and experiments to demonstrate what they learn ,they can show their own thinking and findings through practice, they can run their own business... They are inspired by free, broad and considerate education and developing their talents. They are performing and becoming stars on their own stages. All in all, with strong will to learn and good chance to learn, students can get academic, professional or personal achievement at least. Then it is not hasty to assume such education effective.
If education ignores individual needs and interests, it may become a assembly line and mechanically pour things into students regardless of individual distinction. Different students may have different responses to such education. Those who are active in thinking and doubting won't be satisfied to be a passive containment and they may reject education because it hampers their progress. Others who just submissively accept what available will be less independent and less admissive by the challenging world. Both results are against the purpose of education.
However, every coin has two sides. It is likely that such education only focusing on the needs and interests of students leads to imbalance and disorder. Firstly, students are growing and changing day after day. What attracted them yesterday may be no longer popular today. If education is designed to meet their needs, then it has to be modified, changed and overwhelmed all the time, without definite direction. It may consume a lot but progress little. Secondly, students have various needs and interests, some of which are entirely opposite. To meet whose needs and interests and ignore whose will be a big problem that teachers and educationalists must face. Thirdly, we students cannot justify what we want is good and reasonable to ourselves, to others and to the whole society. We have no rights to establish our happy life on the basis of others' tragedy. Finally, the fact is that the present society cannot promise one to get what he/she wants, limited by current economic, social and technological level.
What's more, education won't be effective regardless of the needs and interests of society. We are living in a society and we have to access into the society sooner or later .If education cast no concern about the needs and interests of the society and neither do students ,students may not meet the needs of the society. Self-improvement won't come true if one cannot survive at first. So it is necessary of education to teach students some ability and skills to live and work in a society, as well as some important characteristics, such as responsibility, honesty, open-mindedness to make students more welcomed by others and the society.
In conclusion, to meet the needs and interests of individuals and the society are both crucial tasks of education. Students can survive in society and achieve self-improvement when education is both oriented and well balanced. Society can also get useful members. Therefore, both students and society benefit from education. |
