Argument 13
Granted that, the conclusion in this argument is relative sound, that the purchase of the book “Squirrel Power” rights will undoubtedly be a wise investment. To justify this conclusion, the speaker points out Wood’s last three books have been best sellers and the movie based on his first book was highly profitable. In addition, the arguer reasons that the popular characters and story line in “Squirrel Power” will save us time in developing our video game, thereby reduce cost. However, this argument is, in fact, unconvincing for several critical flaws.
In the first place, the major problem with this argument is that the arguer fails to establish the caused relationship between the fact that movie based on Wood’ book was sold well and the assumption that the video game will take us high profits. It is true, both the movie and the game are based Wood’ books, which are popular in the people, however, the game and movie have their own receivers. Maybe because the game’ players are younger than the movie’ spectators, who like to watch films does not want to play games. If the speaker does not provide sufficient evidences to prove that the man who enjoys watching films must enjoy playing games, the conclusion does not convince us.
Another flaw that weakens the logic of the augment is that we can not judge the soon-to-be book “squirrel Power” will be as popular as Wood’ last three books without any relevant evidence. Perhaps, after writing three successful children’ book, Wood has lacked of inspiration to create more attractive books. Maybe, the children readers have be bored with Wood’s book, so that they also does not wish for the game based on this book. Without a successful and popular book, we can hardly imagine there would be how many people want to buy this video game.
Before I conclude my conclusion, it is necessary to point out another fallacy. The speaker assumes that the popular characters and story line in “Squirrel Power” will save us time in making our video game, thereby decrease outlay. Nevertheless, the speaker provides no evidence to substantiate this assumption. Given other possible explanations for reducing game’s cost, this evidence in itself lends little credible support to the speaker’s theory about the popular characters and story line cause the cost decrease.
To sum up, this argument is not persuasive as it stand. The conclusion lacks of sufficient evidence to convince us that the purchase of these rights will certainly a wise investment. Before we accept the conclusion, we need more compelling evidence that the books and movies’ success can cause the game’ success. And to solidify the argument, the arguer should have to present more compelling evidence that the popular characters and story line in “Squirrel Power” will save us time in developing our video game, thereby reduce cost. |
