------题目------
In the Bayhead Public Library, books that are rarely borrowed continue to take up shelf space year after year, while people who want to read a recent novel frequently find that the library's only copy is checked out. Clearly, the library's plan to replace books that are borrowed no more than once a year with sufficient copies of more recent books will solve this problem. The protest we have heard since this plan was made public has come from a small, and thus unrepresentative, group of some thirty people and so should therefore be ignored.
------正文------
In this argument the arguer recommends that the library should plan to replace books that are borrowed no more than once one year with sufficient copies of more recent books to solve the problems they meet. At first glance, this argument is very specific and convincing. A careful examination of it, however, would reveal how groundless it is.
Firstly, the mere fact that some books are rarely borrowed while many recent novels can not meet people's need is insufficient to conclude that the books that borrowed lees than once a year should be replaced. Most of all, it is no evidence that people want to borrow more recent books, the arguer simply equate the recent novel with recent books, which is somewhat ridiculous. Furthermore, grant that people prefer to recent books and the library' storage can not satisfy their need, it is still unadvisable to carry out this plan, common sense tells us that recent book such as periodical are short-time aimed issue. They will lose its attraction soon, in another word, they will become old books soon. In this sense, it is on use to just replace the 'olds' with news one time, we need do this frequently. Besides, the less borrowed books are not equal to unimportant books. The classical literature and academic books are essential for a library to attract readers and such reader will be disappointed when they can not find what they need.
Besides, the relative small number of the protesting people does not follow that they can be ignored. Firstly, so many people might not notice the library’ plan just because the plan has not been well publicized, if so, it is natural that only thirty people reject this project. If the library make a survey involving all of the people, it is quite possible that the library receive extensive rejection. Grant that the plan is well-known, people may choose silence but not go to the library again as rejection. Finally, even if most of people are not against this plan, the thirty might be the people who use the library most frequently这个说法不太合适吧,30人对公众图书馆来说不算多 or the people who fund the library. Their opinion should not been omitted.
To sum up, this argument is not well reasoning and lack credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lead support to what the arguer maintains. To make this argument more convincing, the arguer would have to provide evidence to prove the old book are no use and the storage recent book can not meet need of readers.
问题抓得很准,说得也挺清楚。实话说我觉得这个题有点难度,一开始看这个题的时候我有点蒙,不过你写得很好。 |
