There is a growing concern over the issue of whether conformity always leads to a deadening of individual creativity and energy. As far as I know, conformity and individual creativity are not mutually exclusive.

Admittedly, blindly conforming to the established practices or theories prevents us from making creative breakthroughs. We can never require students with different background, different interests to squeeze in the same size of shoes. Inventions and discoveries are usually derived from individual creativity. We should encourage people to be creative, so that we can have a colorful world. One good case in point is that schools require students to wear uniforms which deprive individual students' creativity. What people wear and their appearance can largely show their personality, when students are required to dress in the same style uniform, their individuality soon disappears. Let's image that the world has people everywhere with the same ideas, the same appearance, the same behavior, though there are many people exist, actually there is only one person exist. What can be worse than this? Our colorful world, indeed, perished!

The advance in history of science has demonstrated that the breaking up of conventional ways of thinking or practices leads to new inventions or discoveries. Darwin's discovery of the evolution theory serves as a typical example. It is not in the laboratory when doing experiments or reading books in the library --conventional ways of doing research that did Darwin discover the theory but on his tour and experience around different places. Meanwhile, no one is able to discover the evolution theory in the laboratory. Wright Brothers who invented the planes, did not blindly follow the conventional way either. While people thought they were crazy, since they never seen and would never believed that anything man-made could take human beings fly in the sky. But they two actually did! Therefore breaking up of the conventional ways of thinking and practices can our society make progress。

However, discarding all conventions is just as harmful as blind conformity. Conventions are usually the basic rules or principles which are accumulated experience of our precedents. Following such convention would save us much time when solving similar problems. A physical scientist has to follow the gravity rule when doing experiment. A farmer has to sow the seeds in spring and get the harvest in fall.

In sum, blind conformity does destroy individual creativity.
