Issue36:
The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
------------------------
In the long course of human history, the greatness of a galaxy of giants is decided by their offspring. So some people assert that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them. In my point of view, this assertion is too extreme because there are a number of examples from every field that contradict this hasty generalization. Thus, in deciding the greatness of individuals, we should take an attitude of case-by-case.

In the science realm, some individuals' greatness is decided by people who live after them. For example, Copernicus, a scientist who strongly believed that the sun is the center of the universe while in Europe of his time people all believed that the earth is the center. And also, religion force was very strong at that time. So Copernicus was regarded as heresy. But he insisted on his assertion and was finally sentenced to death. By the same token, Bruno, also a scientist who agreed with Copernicus Theory, was fired on the stake. After a long period of time, their assertions were proved to be correct, and then they were given the respect they deserved. On the contrary, however, there are also a number of giants, the greatness of who is decided by their contemporaries. Take Andrew Wales from Princeton as an example. He solved Fermat’s Last Theorem in 1995 which used be an unsolved problem for more than 300 years before his solution. His greatness has already been established before his 50s. Just like him, the examples of John Nash, Einstein, and Newton are also convincing. In short, the greatness of individuals in science realm would be decided from case to case.

Also, in Arts field, Mozart's music was regarded to be great during his life time. Likewise, Van Gogh's paints, Mark Twain's stories are widely accepted by their contemporaries as masterpieces too. On the contrary, Shakespeare's works was accepted more than two hundred years after his death.

What’s more, in the economy area, the greatness of Bill Gates is obvious now. Because his software company has not only greatly promoted the development of America economy but also given a great force to establish America's top state in science research and computer technology development. But also in contrast, in Japan, there are some merchants who use their lifetime to manage a company or even a store, this kind of greatness wouldn't be known until their company grows big; but the growing time may take a few generations, like Panasonic.

In conclusion, there are a number of factors that can influence to the decision of the greatness of individuals in the field of science, Arts, economy and others. So, in deciding the greatness of an individual, it's necessary to be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

So, in deciding the greatness of an individual, it's necessary to be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

像Bill有这样一句has not only greatly promoted the development of America economy but also given a great force to establish America's top state in science research and computer technology development.

In the science realm, some individuals' greatness is decided by people who live after them.

After a long period of time, their assertions were proved to be correct, and then they were given the respect they deserved .

Bill Gates
