------题目------
In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
------正文------
The topic above suggests that all faculty should participate in some academic work outside in professions relevant to their teaching field so as to enhance their class-instruction quality. For some subjects, this suggestion, leading to faculty’s mastery of both theory and practice, can really benefit university students; however, there are still more important things that should be taken into account.
Teacher's working experience, if they have, do help to improve teaching skills in some courses involving much interaction with the real world, such as the hydroelectric engineering, dynamic and mechanic engineering, and so on. Rich experience obtaining from working outside in relevant professions can provide access for the professors to much clear instruction and vivid description. Take the hydroelectric engineering for example, when students cannot understand the complicated operation of a generator only through the boring explanation of a textbook, professors having real operation experience may lead students to experiment on a generator model. Obviously, such instruction will impress the students much more than merely reading the book.
However, people should be awakened to the fact that the suggestion for all faculty to get work outside is nearly impossible to put into reality. There are three reasons. Firstly, some theoretical subjects are really hard to connect with any actual work, such as the Analytical Physics, the Theoretical Mathematics, etc. The work relevant to such fields hardly exists. Secondly, it is of no necessity for some basal courses, the music rudiment for example, to interact with factual work. Because so easy they are that students have no difficulty to understand them. Finally, there are unnecessarily enough positions for all faculty of colleges and universities to work outside, even temporarily. The flowing of school professors to the outside world may finally leads to others’ unemployment, which is apparently unexpected by the society.
Attention should also be drawn to the negative effect if teachers all go out to get work experience. The most serious one may be that such work will take too much time and energy of the faculty, which may in the end decline rather than improve the quality of their academic work. It is really dubious to imagine that a professor having worked six hours outside still have vigor to have instruct the students in the following two work hours. Another defect is that, considering the relative high pay outside, the faculty may quit their job in colleges and take full work outside. Money’s attraction to some people is vital, with no exception of professors.
For improving the students' learning interest and the faculty's teaching ability, the best way may be proper teachers put into proper time and energy to proper outside work. That is, university leaders should consider carefully and make decision that what teachers should spend time to get real working experience, how long they can work outside one day, and how much they should be paid.
Thus the topic idea really involves a multitude of aspects worth consideration. Only through careful plan can colleges and universities make the sensible decision. |
