Innovation is significant for the society in that it is innovation prompts the society advancing ceaselessly, which is basically admitted by everyone. But here there is another problem related with it, that is who create the true innovation, whether the individuals while the team only work out details or the group. As far as I am concerned, in the past, the individuals do played an important role in the progress of our society, however, with the development of the science and technology, the groups tend to do more contribution.

In the past, the special situation determined the fact that the great breakthrough were mostly made by the individuals. Firstly, since the level of science was in a low standard, most of the total amount of knowledge is not as large as today, it is relative simpler for individuals to make innovation. They just made innovation based on their experience, the way of making paper by Cai lun, Bi sheng’s art of print, even the invention of plane, are all good example to prove the opinion above.  

Besides, the external environment condition in the past was unfavorable for research, the productivity level was low at that time, the majority had to try their best to fill their stomach and not wear rags, thus nobody would organize group to do some research, only some individuals who owned the interest and enthusiasm to research can make the full use of their genius to make great breakthrough. Moreover, many result of science contradicted with the inviolable believes of church, so the churches always exerted their authority to prevent the development of science and punished the people who do the research, let alone organize team to do so. Only a few people who have the enthusiasm to science and enormous encourage to face the persecution can insist their researches and make these significant innovation. Galileo, Darwin are persecuted by the church for a long term, Bruno even was sentenced to death, how the church allow teams to do so?

However, the team work tends to become more important in the way of progress. With the development and progress of the science and technology, the physical resource are extremely abundant, governments tend to found organization to gather teams to do some researches. Moreover, in today's knowledge explosive society, most of works are very great and complicated, it is almost impossible for individuals to make great innovation depended on his/her own capacity. Thus works is divided minutely, only the team comprised by many individuals can fulfill the increasing difficult problems. See the invention of computer, the landing on the moon, the use of nuclear energy, the technology of clone and so on, all of which can not been completed by one talent, only the teamwork can make them. That is why we remember fewer and fewer name of great scientists and what we keep in mind is just the innovations themselves.

In conclusion, it is true that individuals is the impetus for innovation in the past, but nowadays, the group make more and more significant role in the process of innovation.
