The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
------正文------
Looking back the history, people never stop making judgments. For individuals' greatness, some people might think it could be decided justly by their contemporaries since they shared the same social environment. However, in my opinion, I sincerely believed that with more justness and fairness, a conclusion on people's greatness could only be drawn by those who live after them.

First, later people could manage to collect more necessary information to make their decision, avoiding being partial. As is known to all, not all the new things are unfailing. Some pop music could prevail through a country in one night-everybody got to be familiar with its tune in a short time, but it vanished soon either, a time short than one decade. While some classic music, which perhaps could not be well-understood and appreciated by many people without professional knowledge, are studied and performed by countless outstanding musicians generation by generation, making huge influence to the development of modern music. Thus, the greatness of musicians might hard to be well decided by contemporaries since people often tended to make a narrow conclusion basing on what they saw and hear, the responses of people around them in a certain period of time. While all-sided understanding and consideration of individuals are always belong to later people.  

Second, later people might understand what could not be accepted by contemporaries and find out their value and greatness. Throughout the development of human beings, no matter in the field of art, literature, or nature science, many glorious achievements, especially some abstracted mental products, were recognized no by contemporaries but very later people for its super advancement. Van Gogh, a distinguish painter, produced many excellent works and moreover innovated a unique thought of expression of nature. Nevertheless, it is him who lived in poverty all his life, suffered severe depression, and finally killed himself in his 37; Du fu, a famous poet in ancient China, became homeless and even was ragged by imps; Btuno, philosopher and astronomer in Italy, was burnt to death for his support to the scientific theory that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun. All these examples above revealed that usually later people with more advanced education and more open sight might understand former people much better and know their real values. Therefore after the test of the time and practice, individuals' greatness should be only decided by who live after them.

Last but not lest, personal benefits always play a role, major or minor, when a person makes judgment about others; most people only see one side. Thus, later people obviously are superior to contemporaries at this point.

In conclusion, the greatness of individuals could only be decided by later people, who are more just, fair-minded, and informed, and moreover they views have the profundity of history.
