------题目------
The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
'Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores.'
------正文------
In this memo, the manager tries to convince us that by increasing stock of office supplies and home office machines the office-supply departments can be the most profitable component of his stores. To back up his suggestion, he cites a recent survey reported that over 70 percent of respondents are required to take work home with them from workplace than they were in the past. In my point of view, the argument is unconvincing for several flaws.
First of all, the arguer gratuitously assumes that this trend is bound to happen. However, the credibility and reliability of the survey is open to doubt, Are the persons randomly chosen to survey? Do all the persons surveyed respond? Do the respondents all work in the office? The author do not provide any information about these questions. Unless the respondents are shown to be representative, any conclusion is completely unwarranted.
If granted that there is a trend of people who are more likely to work at home, then do they all need these office machines? The author are lack of sufficient investigations about those people. Many of them may simply need paper, pens or other things that are not in the range of the Valu-Mart stores, in this case, it would bring a lot of stocks to sell bad, or even useless. Then in turn would cost the stores much to just maintain the sells or lose the market.
Besides, the arguer also neglects a critical element to increase their sells. Goods customers buy are not only from their diverse stocks, but also the quality, styles or other factors. If the stores of the Valu-Mart do not pay much attention to other factors except the quantity, they may be lose their deserved share of market, and to get profits would be a dream that never comes true.
As a result, the author's recommendation is unpersuasive or unreasonable without detailed investigation. To strengthen his suggestion, he needs to do a investigation about whether there is really a need to provide such office-supplies. |
