Issue 38:In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.

The speaker asserts that, with the impact that television brings us, reading books pales importance compared to the television in acquiring information. In my view, the speaker has taken the  idea too far. While I agree that television has its own merit, especially in instantaneous news reports, I think reading books still has its unshakable statue in people’s learning process.

I agree with the speaker insofar that television holds certain advantages over books for delivering us first-time and first-hand information. The cameraperson could reach the frontier of battle field in a war, the bottom of the sea when an exploration is under way, the Congress hall where the president is delivering his speech, then our eye-shot and ear-shot extended to where the camera point to. Besides, due to the improvement of technology, television now can provide people an accurate and vivid picture of the event happening.

Those advantages of television could be illustrated best in the broadcasting of 911 events, during which CNN’s news greatly impressed me. The camera has captured the hijacked plane before it crashed into the twin towel of World Trade Centre in New York. Then in the next few days, the 24-hour news transmit series of events happening and the image to my screen, that the planes crashing into the twin towel, the inferno inside the building, the helpless people trapped in the fire, the heroic fireman, the collapsing or the twin tower, the reality of the catastrophe displayed by television impact my heart, and make me more clearly realized the devilishness of the terrorism.

On the other hand, book’s plays an important role in people’s learning process. Book is written in structural organization without irrelevant descriptions that taken up people’s time, thus people could turn quickly to the chapter in need. And schoolbooks are written in concise sentences which directly address the point of knowledge. The student can learn the knowledge with best efficiency. Consider a mathematic textbook, with simple formulas and equations, the book delivered the knowledge of how and why of the mathematic problems, and the thousands of year’s discovery in mathematics concentrates in the hundreds of pages. Though nowadays some courses are offered through television, the books are the mains source from which the students draw knowledge and ideas.

Another compelling superiority over television is recording the history. Television can bring us an accurate image of the historical event, however it may omission some meaningful segment of the history while conserve some unnecessary ones, thus incompletely portrait the history. Also considering the example of 911, to duplicate all information in the catastrophe exhaustively, we need to set camera in every corners of the street corner, every stairs of World trader centre. It is an impossible mission and most of the information is redundant and useless in reflecting the historical event. And we notice that, even with the help of the live broadcasting, we still cannot determine the identity and the motivation of the hijackers. Nevertheless, in the books of history, historian summarized the cause, process, and the consequence of a historical event, using statistical figures to generally depict the events, taking specially attention to the leading persons, and significant incidents that determines the direction of history. The “inaccurate” one, books has indeed more useful information to people.

To summarize, though television has its own merit in reflecting instantaneous matters and give us vivid pictures, books serves better in the realm of education and history. Far from obsolete, books will continue playing the important role in passing down our culture and keeping evidence of historical events.
