The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
------正文------
There is much controversy over the issue of who can decide the greatness of individuals. The speaker asserts that only the descendants can justify the greatness of individuals, but the contemporaries can not. However, I partly agree with the speaker's assertion in that the greatness of the individuals can be better recognized by those who live after them. There were also many exceptions in point.
In the common sense, why the great is great is that their ideas, theories and behaviors have already transcended the scope of the cognition of the ordinary people. So their greatness can not be appreciated with the sufficient understand and respect. The example in point is the great scientist Bruno. He insisted on the heliocentric theory of Copernicus and developed his own cosmic theory. He was forced to give up his beliefs by the Inquisition and considered as heretic man at that time. At last he was burned on the stake because he did not yield to the Church. Another example i can sited is the great artist Van Gogh. When he was alive, his works were not accepted by the most people because he broke the common rule of the painting. But now his paintings are among the most valuable art treasures.
Furthermore, especially in science field, many theories must be tested by times and practice for even centuries. The master of the science always contrived their own ideas by their extradinary intelligence. Even though these ideas are truth, the scientific condition can not be sufficient to support and testify their ideas. So it should take a long time to facilitate the equipments and scientific conditions to justify the effect of the truth. Take the example of Einstain, his theory of relativity can not be perceived by many people at that time. Until now we can understand only part of it through the advanced development of technology and doing some scientific experiment. Some contents of the theory still can not be proved by scientific experiments because of the confine of the technology.
However, as I mentioned at the beginning, there were also many exceptions especially in political and business areas. In such areas, the greatness of the figures must be recognized by the contemporaries. Thus, they can exert their influence on the mass to realize their goals. For instance, President of America Lincoln, was considered as the wise and prominent leader of all the American people of his day. So he could unify all the mass he can unify to break down the slavery. If his greatness were not be recognized by his supporters, he had not achieved such a historic landmark in the freedom of black. It is the same to a great businessman. His greatness is exhibited by his unexpected strategy and shrewd approaches. If he were not successful in his field, he had not been viewed as a great businessman.
All in all, the greatness of individuals can be better understood and appreciated by those who live after them. However there are still many exceptions. Therefore, we can not easily justify the greatness of individuals only in the sense of time. We should make the judgment according to the various situations.
