In history, quite a few so called great people at their times went out of people's sight as time went by; there also were some Persons, however, who were not compatible with their society, but are much honored today .Any truth would be one only after the test of time, and so does that a great person could be a great. In fact, the greatness of individuals are not decided by their contemporaries, but by people living years, decades, or even centuries later.
In the first place, for lack in knowledge, usually the majority can not make right evaluation to brilliant individuals, whose ideas appear ahead of their times in most cases. In every society, the masses get information from education, common sense, or their experiences, based on which they make judgment. If the words or behaviors of some persons go beyond their knowledge, they will be confused, suspicious, rejective and even afraid for these persons' seemingly insane ideas, just like what happened on some great ones in history. A good example in case is Bruno, a great Italian philosopher, who advocated the theory of Copernicus , that the earth is not the center of the universe which contradicted with the opinion people had been holding. He, not with standing, was put into fire by the church because they thought him a heretic, and his doctrine did not become accepted until many years after his death. The case of Bruno is not a rare one, and history abouds with the examples of people who underwent the same `misfortune as him, which time and time again, illustrate a fact that people can hardly give just evaluation to their contemporaries caused by the limited knowledge.
In the second place, sometimes people's eyes are dusted, due to the complexity of the fact, or the illusion made by dominators, so they can not discern the truth clearly any more, as well as the greatness of individuals. This is true in many cases. As a proverb goes that the bacon does not shine on its own base, people can not make wise decision as they are in a society, where the concept of value, perhaps wrong, has been set up before, on which they give their criterion how to value a person, and even the information given is far beyond the fact. Some dictators in history, for instance, successfully gained much respect of their citizens by making an illusion, and pretending to be mercy leaders. Only many years later, after their death, people found themselves cheated by these brutal rulers. This case demonstrates that it is hard for people contemporary make objective judgment for the influnce of conditions in which they live.
Admittedly, in some other cases, people can make right judgment to the greatness of individuals contemporary, such as Newton, who has been given great honor since his time, Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest presidents in American history, ect. This can not push over the statement above yet. Because it only tells a fact that contemprary people made a judgment according with the truth, nevertheless they did not know whether they had done the right decision , which still needs to be judged by people living after them.
In sum, from a historical view, what people think right at present could become completely absurd tomorrow, and probably, a person we disdain now is likely to become a great one in eyes of our inferiors. Incredible? It is the truth, however. This is a good news to certain ordinary persons today, with eccentric ideas, who have never stop thinking to be a great man. Their dreams seem a little funny maybe, but who can exclude the possibility that they would become examples for inferiors to learn from 200 years later?
